Christmas ornaments are one of my favorite crafts to make, and this one is no exception. Years ago I made a version of these little winter hat ornaments at a class party. With a few changes, I’m sharing the updated version here today.

Ornament Yarn Craft
Whether hung on the Christmas tree or topping a package, these little winter hat ornaments are an easy and inexpensive craft for the whole family.
Ornament Yarn Craft Supplies:
- Recycled cardboard tubes from T.P. or paper towels
- Assorted Pretty and Festive Colored Yarn
- Small white pom-poms
- Ornament hangers or trim ribbon
You will also need scissors, a ruler, and a hot glue gun.
Assemble Your Winter Hat Ornament Yarn Craft
Start by cutting a ring from the cardboard tube. (I made mine 3/4-inch wide.)
Tie a 10-inch piece of yarn around the the cardboard ring using a lark’s head knot. Repeat until the cardboard ring is completely covered.
Using another piece of yarn, tie a knot around the ends as pictured.
Push the knotted ends back through the ring to create the hat shape.
Finish by hot-gluing a small pom-pom to the top and adding an ornament hanger or piece of trim ribbon for hanging.
Aren’t they cute?

Have a good day
I made these in like 2nd grade. They are so cool
i just felt like posting another comment
I saw a version of this project that was a little different. The cut end were pushed back up through the ring before tying, then after tying the ends fairly close to the ring, stuff the inside of the hat with tissue and trim the ends of the yarn rather short to create a same-color Pom Pom. I would leave one or two strands uncut to mKe a hanging loop that comes right out of the center of the Pom. The crafter had a table top tree with only these in all different colors and types of yarn and made me want dig out those partial skeins lurking downstairs in my yarn stash.
So fun! That sounds darling too! Thanks for stopping by!
So very adorable! Thank you for sharing!
Love these little hats. Made them and shared with my daughters. But one question is how to finish the hat where the yarn is pushed inside the hat to give it body. Do you cover it or will that yarn stay once it is pushed inside or will it come out after time.
I’ve seen this same ornament and the crafter put a table tennis ball up into the open end, drew a snowman’s face on the ball with a marker and a carrot-colored nose, and hung the ornament on the tree. It’s really cute also.
I love that idea Barb!! That would be a fun addition to these darling hats. Thanks so much for sharing!
A friend sent your link to me. I knit hats for charity to send to Appalachia. My friend thought I’d like to make these little hats for my tree. So cute. Easy to make too. My little 3 year old grandson will enjoy seeing these little tiny hats on the tree. And the added bonus he can take them off the tree to examine them without worry….. they won’t break!
Thanks for the very cute idea.
These are so adorable. Can’t wait to try. Thanks for sharing.
I came across your blog while looking for crocheted beanie and this is not what I expected HAHA This is such a cute idea though! I also think that Christmas trees should have mini beanies as ornaments. Will save this for next Christmas! Thanks for sharing 🙂
I do like your version of the little hat. Have made them before but tying after pushing through. Your version is much nicer. Shall be making them again.
Thank you for sharing.
