Applying a Vinyl Backsplash:
Here’s how it all went down…
So I wanted to add some pizzazz without having to do a ton of work or having to spend a lot of money. What to do…what to do….. I then ran across this post at House of Smith’s (as I’m sure many of you have). The quatrefoil caught my eye and got my wheels spinning. I was thinking about painting the design but knew that it would be tough getting it right. I thought about stenciling but all the quatrefoil stencils I’ve seen are HUGE and I wanted them to be quite small. So I too decided to do it in vinyl. Then I could do whatever size I wanted and it would be easy to put up.
I tinkered with the design in my vinyl program and figured out how to cut 22″ wide sheets of the quatrefoil design! Most of my backsplash is about 15″ tall so I cut enough 15×22″ sheets to cover my kitchen backsplash and I was all set! (I have made it available for sale in my Etsy shop HERE. You can order a sample to try first!).
But first I needed to remove the soul-sucking beige so I painted the backsplash area a nice gray (Valspar Montpeilier Ashlar Gray). I thought it would tie in nicely with the gray in my countertops as well the appliances and hardware.
You can watch my HOW TO APPLY A VINYL BACKSPLASH video HERE or watch below:
I used an exacto knife to cut around outlets and for the small amount of overhang at the bottom. It cut it like buttah.
how does one go about curing paint?
you are awesome. and now your kitchen is, too.
Curing paint is super hard… you have to sit around and watch American Idol for it to completely dry. Patience is not my strong point so I was very proud of myself for waiting. And thanks! You’re the best.
Wow…that turned out beautifully. Thanks for sharing.
Jessica
WOW!! I need some of your expertise! Quick, inexpensive, and looks GREAT!! Well done!
Wow! You did a fantastic job! It almost gets me a little motivated to do something to mine! lol.
I feel like the picture behind the cooktop MAKES the kitchen. It’s such an awesome pop of color.
Also, what is WITH you americans and the Diet Dr. Pepper. I’m a fan, but it’s SO hard to find in Canada.
I’m a Diet Coke LIFER.
Also, I love House of Smith’s pantry, and I love seeing how you used that for inspiration for the backsplash. AWESOME!
You’ve been hiding this amazingly creative and energetic person somewhere. π And now, I wish I could stand close to you for a few minutes and pick up some of the creativity and energy. I’m starting to look around my house and it’s really…uh…needs something. I still totally love my chocolates and warm colors, but it could really use some fresh-ness. Can you make chocolates and warm fresh? If you run out of projects at your house and need something to do….??? ;-D I Love it, btw. Your kitchen looks awesome and I can’t get over that blue you’re using. LOVE it.
Holy cow. Just cleaned that filter thing above my stove. Honestly I didn’t even know it was under there. Sheesh. The things they don’t teach you in school. LOL Love you blog!
Fabulous and soo easy!
Oh, it looks so much better! I’m SO TIRED of everybody painting their interiors beige! This looks so much nicer, and less “new homey”. Way to go!
Om man, I am drooling over your kitchen!!! i have i teeny tiny apartment kitchen that is like 8 feet by 6 feet π
i love the makeover!
Thanks for a lovely comment too!
I just painted my kitchen gray and this would be a perfect backsplash idea since we’re renting!
Thanks!
That looks amazing! I can’t believe how beautiful. So, I have had my microwave over the stove for ages and I have never once cleaned the filters…not once. I don’t think I’ve even wiped the bottom of my microwave down. I guess it it breaks I’ll be to blame because I never knew I was to clean it once a month. π

Really great transformation and I love your profile fineprint and tag line. It’s exactly what I do.
Love it! Such a difference it made! And I looked at your SIL’s site and is that your old “kitchen” vinyl underneath your microwave that’s right on her front page! Great blog and I hope you come visit me sometime!
Woah Baby! I love this so much…I will copy it…really…I will…I have been trying to think of something to do for a backsplash, that isn’t so…typical, and you and your inspirations have inspired me π Thank you!

you did a great job on the kitchen! love the colors!
Wow I could so do this in our rental and then take it down!!! Oooooohhhh I’m loving you right now =)
Landee this is beautiful! I’ve been wanting to do a backsplash in my kitchen from paint or stencil somehow. Still not sure but it’s going to be a lot of work! Your’s is beautiful! I would love to have you share this at my VIP party today =) http://designergarden.blogspot.com/2011/03/vip-party-8.html
Wow wow wow! This is amazing! I love stenciling but not everywhere. THIS is a perfect spot:) Glad I found your blog today!
LOVE this! Your kitchen is gorgeous and what an awesome breath of fresh air that gave to it. I actually have paint chips all over my kitchen because I want to change the kitchen color, which basically means the backsplash. My two other random thoughts – there is almost always a styrofoam cup hiding somewhere in my photos (a la Where’s Waldo) to support my Diet Coke addiction, and great, now I can’t plead ignorance on the microwave filter cleaning. Ugh.
Love! It looks amazing, great job.
It’s beautiful! Love this idea with vinyl. Thanks for sharing. I’m a new follower thanks to Tatertots and Jello’s shout out. π
I love it! It’s just beautiful!
It looks so good and makes a huge difference in the look of your kitchen! I also came over from Tatertots and Jello just so you know;)
WOW. and that turquoise frame really pops and makes it!
what a great idea! and removable!! even better than paint!
Oooh love love love! What a cool and modern little update.
-Ally @Tinywalletstyle.com
OMGosh! I LOVE IT!!! Great job and oh-so-easy looking. Thanks for sharing!
I am SOO glad that you did this! I have been thinking about doing this on our backsplash for a few weeks now and my hubby thought I was crazy, lol!! I’m excited to see that yours turned out so awesome!!
I can’t find that vinyl on her website. Could you send me a direct link?
Love it! Darling! Fantastic job! Love your site and your blogging style, too. π
ooohhh….yeah…gonna check into that vinyl for sure!! seeing your “backsplash” made me laugh. we just got done refinishing our cabinets and got new countertops. the backsplash behind the stove is gone and all i had to look at was ugly drywall. so i used sticky squares to hold scrapbooking paper up there….thought about getting a piece of clear acrylic to put over it…my hubs thinks i’m crazy. thanks for the confirmation that i’m on the right track!! will link you back if i do it!
oh! and i’m totally a follower now!
AMAZING transformation! Definitely tucking this idea away for when we finally buy a home π
I am writing an article on different types of backsplash. I would love to use this idea in my post. I will link back to you. I hope you don’t mind.
http://houseonashwelllane.blogspot.com/
quite possibly my most favorite kitchen ever. and now i’m wishing i hadn’t just seen it at 10:00 pm, just so i can stay up longer and figure out the perfect color combo for my kitchen!!! LOVE IT.
WOW! I just ran across this on ‘in the loop”! Love your backsplash and blog! I’m your newest follower!
RANDOM QUESTION: Where’s your oven?
Hi Anonymous! Your question made me laugh. I came back here to see if I really didn’t have them pictured anywhere and then I spotted them! If you look in the photo up there where I’ve just started painting the backsplash gray and everything is piled on the island, you can see I have double ovens stacked there along the back wall on the left.
Thanks for stopping by!
thats great for someone who rents. me<--- the place we are moving out of doesn't have a backsplash 7 that is perfect for a place like this. thanks for the idea.
would you consider selling this backsplash vinyl? π totally interested.
Beautiful -brought a smile to my face immediately!
I LOVE the idea!!! I have been planning my kitchen, but some backsplashes are sooo busy. I love the simplicity of your choice.
Question: Is the vinyl just the stenciling part? I am assuming that is why you painted? Is the vinyl stuck tp that paper and it literally pulls off?
Sorry for my ignorance, it just seems vinyl has changed sooo much in 10 years!
How can I buy that vinyl for my own backsplash!? π
Your kitchen looks great!! Is there a way we can order vinyl from your SIL’s company? Would love to do my pantry. Thx!!
You could hang some plexiglass over the stove.
Very Nice. I was wondering, if your counters were already Gray to start with?
This is so neat! I am wondering though what to do when you have a wall that connects to another wall (our kitchen/dining room are combined) do you just “stop” the stencil and cut it?
such a beautiful project! Love it!
Featured this project here too!
-Mel the Crafty Scientist
This looks amazing, I can’t believe it’s from a stencil! Just wanted to let you know that I had included this in my stencil-project roundup π
http://upcycledtreasures.com/2013/04/creative-diy-stencil-projects/
I searched for backsplash ideas on Pinterest and saw your post – so – even though it was 5 years ago – I have to ask – in the before your counters appear to be white and in the after they are grey – did you paint your countertops to replace them? Other than that, the project looks great – thanks for sharing.
I didn’t paint the counters or replace them. I took the befores at night and the afters during the day. Exposure problems! π Thanks for stopping by!
Love your blog! Your Pinterest page. Your ideas are refreshing and really nice. I do have a question. I am new to this but was wondering where I find the vinyl that you used?
Thanks so much
I sell it in my Etsy shop now! You can find a link to it HERE: https://www.etsy.com/listing/90901990/sample-only-kitchen-backsplash-pantry-or
We offer a $3 sample for you to try out and then you message us the dimensions of your backsplash and we will give you a quote!
What about sealing the vinyl with a lacquer. That picture would not last long at my house. I actually used bead board for my back-splash but the area behind the stove is embossed tin.
other thought… behind the stove, buy glass and frame it onto the wall covering it behind the stove. I would look at the habitat store for textured glass for pizzazz
Hi I donβt see where you buy the vinyl? It looks great and I am updating my moms kitchen would love to add this feature.
Hi Donna! You can order it via my Etsy shop HERE– https://www.etsy.com/shop/LandeeOnEtsy Just message us with the height of your backsplash as well as how many linear feet you’d need and we can give you a quote. Thanks!
Hi there! I would love to purchase this….is this something that you sell? and where do I find it? I went to Etsy, but can’t find it. Thank you for any help! This is for my daughters apartment – this would be perfect for it. We were debating what to do – this is a great option!
Where do you purchase this product! I love it and it’s looks perfect for what I would like to do at my daughters apartment. Thank you!
I did go on Etsy – but couldn’t find it.
