Here is what the room looked like several years ago when we first moved in…. yeah. Sad.
So, I have a little secret. And this is going to blow your mind… but, you guys, ::deep breath:: I have a teenager. I know! I know! I look so young! I couldn’t POSSIBLY have a teenager! And yet, here I sit, the mother of a 13 year old boy.
Just kidding… you guys are probably like “What? I would have thought she had a kid in college judging by those crow’s feet.” I am able to sleep at night by telling myself I have those crow’s feet because I am so. dang. happy. that I smile and laugh too much. Cuz that’s totally the reason. ::ahem::
But now I’m completely off topic…
The point is, I have a teenage boy and the poor kid needed a space of his own. He had been sharing a room with his brother since he was two so I thought he deserved it. Not to mention he’s a fantastic kid with fantastic grades and a fantastic disposition. Even at 13 years old (although I can see some of that disposition fading as he gets a little moodier and smart-aleck-ier, but I’ve prepped for the worst so I’m good).
So I took our guest room and made the kid his own personal sports-driven-boy-happy-place!
Then, when I first started my blog, my little Guest Room Spruce Up was one of the first projects I ever posted and here is what it looked like after that…
And NOW it is still the room you’d stay in if you came to visit but it has a much different feel in there. Boy heaven! It’s particularly nice if you have an affinity towards the San Francisco Giants. We had a Dodger fan visit a few weeks ago and he turned the shams around. 🙂
I knew Jack wanted a “sports room” without it being too cheesy. You know, no stenciled baseball borders or football decals on the wall. He is also in LOVE with the Giants. It’s a deep love that goes back a couple of generations to my husband’s grandma. She used to travel around on a fan bus to watch them play all over the country! So when I saw this bedding in Pottery Barn Teen I knew it would be perfect! You can choose National League teams or American League teams for the quilt and then get whatever team’s shams you want. I’m lovin’ the orange.
I painted the room Valspar Montpelier Ashlar Gray (the same color I used in my kitchen here & here) because I love how it’s actually a warm grey. And it is fantastic with his new comforter. Then, I wasn’t planning on painting the stripe but it looked a little blah without one. Plus if I looked at the right angle, I could see the paint lines from the previous white stripe. Most of the pain of painting a stripe is the measuring and the keeping it level and the more measuring… because I could see the previous lines I just ran some painter’s tape along that same line and then used my Painting the Perfect Stripe technique I used in the kitchen and I was good to go! A little orange paint and about an hour later and this room had some personality.
We then went to Ikea and picked out some furniture… and by some I mean tons. Bed, desk, floating shelves, bookshelf (on opposite wall), and frames. Basically he needed everything.
Above his bed I used three of his new frames and added some sports memorabilia he had. These are his three favorite athletes and he had signed Sports Illustrated magazines from all three! He loves having them on display.
From left to right: Jabari Parker, Jimmer Fredette, Bryce Harper.
(Can anyone tell me what these three athletes have in common? Anyone?)
Then we added the Ikea floating shelves. I will say, making a 13 year old boy’s things look nice is the challenge of all challenges. Ugh. But he loves it and that’s what matters, right? ::sigh::
And finally, my favorite project… a baseball diamond bulletin board! I’ll be sharing a tutorial on how I made this next week. Love how it turned out!
While the bulk of the room is done, there are still a few things I’d like to do. First and foremost is do something with this wall directly across from his bed. I’m thinking some kind of gallery wall with photos of him playing on his various teams, some awesome printables, maybe a team pennant or two… I don’t know! But this isn’t cutting it.
He also needs a better desk chair (nothing another trip to Ikea won’t fix! :). That one is from a kitchen table set we got when we were first married! Yikes.
This room also has a nice little bathroom that I have tinkered with as well. I’ll be sharing more on that next week too! Lots of fun projects going on around here this summer!
Thanks for stopping by!
