I love crafts that make me feel like an artist. Sometimes there are crafts that really, if you want them to turn out well, you have to follow pretty specific directions. This Halloween banner is not one of those crafts. You can do pretty much whatever you want with this baby and it will turn out fabulous! And it will be as unique as you are. I love that!
Here is what you’ll need to make your very own unique stenciled Halloween banner:
- chipboard pennants (I found mine at Hobby Lobby)
- stencils (I found this cute set at Michaels. It’s by Plaid.)
- various craft paint colors of your choosing (I’m going orange, black, white and greys this year!)
- stipple brushes (or foam brushes would work just as well I think)
- Sandpaper if you want the “distressed look” at the end.
STEP ONE: Paint your pennants whatever colors you would like. I bought white chipboard letters on purpose because I wanted the white to show through when I distressed them at the end but I didn’t want white pennants because my mantel is white and they wouldn’t show up as well. So I started by painting them various solid colors.
STEP TWO: Play play play! Use your stencils to make various patterns with lots of different colors layered on top of each other. Get creative!
STEP THREE: Keep playing until you get them how you like them.
STEP FOUR: Optional but I liked it…. take some sandpaper and run it along the edges of the pennants to take some of the paint off. I love the fun edge this gives each individual pennant.
STEP FIVE: Using ribbon, twine or whatever else you can think of, string them up and hang your new artistic Halloween banner!
I think this one was my favorite. I love the little lone orange triangle. 🙂
I also love crafts where perfection is not the idea. I liked it when the paint went under the stencil a little or when it smudged just a bit. It added to the overall look!
I spent the afternoon playing around with paint and then ended up with this… it was a near perfect day, for sure! 🙂
Happy Halloween crafting! It’s my favorite!
