You thought I was finished decorating for the 4th of July? Oh no. Not quite. There is just something about the red, white and blue that makes me want to keep crafting! Today I wanted to share this SUPER inexpensive and VERY fun-to-make Patriotic Tissue Paper Tassel Garland that you could whip up and add to any decor! Switch out the tissue paper colors/patterns for any holiday or room too!
Here is what you’ll need to make one for yourself (or a friend!):
- tissue paper of various colors and patterns
- baker’s twine, coordinating color(s)
- ribbon, coordinating color
- rotary cutter or scissors
STEP ONE: Fold several sheets of tissue paper together in half and cut into strips. I recommend no wider than 1/2 inch. Thinner if your tissue paper is on the heavy side. I used a rotary cutter, cutting mat and straight edge which is VERY easy but scissors would work too (it would be a bit of a pain though, me thinks).
STEP TWO: I liked mixing up my colors and patterns in each tassel but you may like to do all one color. Either way, gather the strips, one at a time, in your hand until you have collected about 20-30 strips. This separates the strips from each other, making the tassel fluffier at the end.
STEP THREE: Twist the strips together at the middle until you can twist them around and make a loop.
STEP FOUR: Secure the twist with baker’s twine.
STEP FIVE: (not pictured) TRIM the bottom of the tassel! This will make a world of difference here. Trim it shorter for a fluffier look, or leave a little longer. I even trimmed them a little more after I got them hung up.
STEP SIX: Repeat, repeat, repeat… until you have the desired number of tassels! Then string up by threading a coordinating ribbon through the loops.
I love this garland because it was so fun to make and SO CHEAP! Tissue paper costs next to nothing and chances are you have plenty in your gift wrap stash already!
Happy 4th of July crafting!
