I love the classic look of newsprint and I thought it would look great as a Christmas ornament! I know a lot of people do sheet music for this kind of thing as well but I don’t have any sheet music laying around and newspaper is very accessible and I love it.
Here is what you’ll need to make one/some of your own!
- newspaper
- Paper-Mache Ornaments (cut off ugly gold string)
- Mod Podge
- Acrylic Craft Paints, in color(s) of your choice
- Circle Punch (or any other shape), mine is a 3/4 inch circle
- extra vinyl or painter’s tape for masking
STEP ONE: Cut newspaper to shape of ornament (one piece for each side) as well as thin strips for the edge of ornament.
STEP TWO: Mod podge newspaper pieces onto ornament. I applied a thin coat to ornament and then applied the paper. When that was dry, I then went over entire ornament with Mod Podge and allowed that to dry as well.
STEP THREE: Punch circles out of vinyl or painter’s tape with your Circle Punch (that’s what I ended up using, pictured above) and apply to ornament. You can also use painter’s tape to create stripes, cut names from vinyl with a Silhouette or Cricut, or use letter stickers to create masks as well! This is where you can really get creative and have a lot of fun! Then paint over entire thing and allow to dry. I wanted the newsprint to show through the paint a little so I didn’t do a very heavy coat.
STEP FOUR: Remove tape/vinyl/stickers and then embellish, embellish, embellish! Add bows, ribbon, baker’s twine, even gemstones if you want!
side note: on the above ornament my paint was very runny so it bled under my painter’s tape a little. No problem! I simply punched circles out of the newspaper and then mod podged them over the top! You can do that method as well! I used normal paint on the other ones and they came out clean as a whistle, btw. đ
I had so much fun making these I kinda had to force myself to stop! Wouldn’t these be fun as gift toppers as well?
Happy Christmas Crafting!

Way too cute! Totally love this idea. May need to make these with my Activity Day Girls. Love!!
I love these. Last year, I had made snowmen ornaments using styrofoam balls and newspaper.
I am doing this activity with my kids, but I couldn’t find any paper mache ornaments ANYWHERE. đ I found some thick cardboard and will attempt that instead. Thanks for the cute idea!
