These adorable salt and pepper shakers are such a fun little mason jar craft… and functional too! Perfect for your kitchen or to give as a gift!
I’m one of those people that puts salt & pepper on anything in sight. Have you ever put pepper on your fries? It’s amaaaayzing. Really. You gotta try it. Anyway, I’ve been wanting to make a set of salt & pepper shakers for a while and I wanted them to be big enough that I wouldn’t have to refill them every week! Some of those sets are so teeny tiny that they hold, like, three shakes and then they’re empty! Yeah, no. So when I spotted these adorable little 6oz. mason jars I knew how I’d make some that would hold enough salt and pepper to douse all the potatoes in Idaho. Done & done!
Want to make some? Here’s what you’ll need:
- 2 6oz mason jars and lids
- “S” and “P” letter stickers or vinyl letters
- 2″ circles of scrapbook paper (I used a 2″ punch)
- Mod Podge
- paint (I used chalk paint because I had some around but regular acrylic craft paint would work too!)
- foam paint brush
- hammer & nail
- rough sand paper
- painter’s tape or masking tape
STEP ONE: Tape off top of jar and apply letter stickers. Paint over entire jars with paint. I applied two coats of paint, allowing them to dry completely between coats.
STEP TWO: Remove letter stickers and painter’s tape and distress jars (if desired) with rough sandpaper. If you’re worried about the paint chipping off more later, you can spray jars with a protective clear coat to seal them. Be careful not to get any spray on the inside of the jars where your salt & pepper will be.
STEP THREE: Mod Podge the 2″ circle of scrapbook paper onto top of lid and allow to dry completely.
STEP FOUR: Using a hammer and nail, punch holes in top of lid.
STEP FIVE: Fill jars with salt and pepper, put the lids back on and you’re done!
I think these would be so cute in any color you would like! I decided to keep them neutral so I could embellish them a little with twine and orange berries at Thanksgiving or red baker’s twine wrapped around the lid for Valentine’s Day or whatever I can dream up!
This was a super easy project that took about an hour start to finish. I love a good mason jar craft and I love how my new salt & pepper shakers turned out! Now I need to make some fries. 🙂

Wow – I really do love these! My 2 sets I have just bit the dust – especially that dumb pepper grinder – who needs it?
Absolutely adorable!!!!!!!!
Where did you find the 6oz jars????
I am in need of new s&p shakers and these are perfect
I got them at Hobby Lobby! They have all kinds of different mason jars there!
they are jelly jars most any Walmart, Kmart, or craft store has them
Seriously our fav. In love.
I actually found large shakers years ago, but I knew the moment I got them, I settled. They are plain and clunky. I’m definitely going to upgrade to your adorable ones!
Stopping by from the Creative Collection link party. Love these! So cute, pinning:)
What type of paint is best for these? I.e. Spray, acrylic etc.
These are so sweet! I am actually thinking of doing them for my homemade sugar blends – like vanilla sugar and autumn spice! I am also sharing your tutorial on my facebook page this week – I am planning to post it 10/21/14! http://www.facebook.com/midnightpretty
What a great idea but did you know that Ball makes 4 oz jelly jars? My husband actually works for Jarden, the company that makes Ball canning products. Go to freshpreserving.com for a look at more products.
Great idea, just wondering though. ..in the picture showing the holes being punched in the top it looks like the piece of metal is flat when the lid is actually raised or has ‘height’ how did you do the lid??
Having problems with the paint peeling off with the stickers.
Jelly or honey mason jars are great to b reuse for these too.
Is you glue the rings to the lids?
No I didn’t. But you could!
I modge podged my scrapbook paper on the lid and after it dried it came right off. did i do something wrong?
Hmmmm… I don’t know! Mine still won’t budge. Try mod podge. Then put your paper on and allow to dry. Then do another coat over the top and let dry. Is that how you did it?
I LOVE these. I had no idea it was so simple or I would have made them ages ago, but I figured it involved a nail gun or screws & that I would need help making them. But I can totally do this. Just have to grab my pink toolbag! (It’s the cutest thing!) But yeah, I am in need of SEVERAL shakers for my tea/coffee station & did not want to spend a lot of money buying multiple sets or the bulk kit off Amazon & have them be too matchy matchy. (I do like that look too but not for my project.) This is perfect & FREE bc I have a ton of mason jars, scrapbook paper that I have held onto forever (bc I knew I would find a use ONE day & this is totally that day!!) I plan on putting things like cinnamon, chai spices, cocoa/cacao powder, brown sugar, powdered creamer etc. in them. I have some of the lids that Ball makes, those ugly & bulky black & bright green ones but the holes are huge. Love the option of customzing the holes!! Thanks so much for the post.
Hi Tara! I’m so glad you can find this project useful! I am still using my S&P shakers every day! Thanks for stopping by!
Where did you find the 6oz mason jars?? I’ve been looking everywhere. I found 8oz but not 6oz. I can’t wait to make these as Christmas gifts!
