If you follow along with me on Instagram you already know that I have been putting together my new home office/craft room. We extended our hardwood floors to cover our entire main level and now I am finally able to make my office into what I’ve been dreaming about for years! And one of the first things I had to figure out was some kind of a work table to use for all of my crafting projects. No more clearing away all of my crafting junk to make dinner in the kitchen. 🙂 After a lot of measuring and figuring, I came up with an Ikea hack craft room table that has been absolutely perfect!!
Ikea Hack Craft Room Table
Here were the things I wanted… counter height, storage, the ability to sit around it and it had to be inexpensive. I searched high and low for something to just buy and there was NOTHING out there! So I started looking at some possibilities at Ikea and dreamed this baby up. It hit all of my wishes.
I cannot emphasize enough how perfect it is and how much I LOVE it. If you want to make one too this is what you’ll need:
IKEA HACK CRAFT ROOM TABLE
- LINNMON Table Top (59″x29.5″) $29.99
- KALLAX shelf unit (33 7/8 x 57 7/8″ x 15 3/8″ deep) $99.00
- OLOV adjustable height table legs $15 each
- (4) 2.5″ wood screws
Yes, you’re reading that right… $160 for the perfect Ikea hack craft room table! It has lots of storage PLUS a place to sit (affiliate link: you can get these stools from Amazon HERE). It is so easy to put together too! Just assemble the KALLAX shelf as per the instructions and then attach the tabletop to the KALLAX from underneath by using the 4 pre-drilled holes in the KALLAX that are there to either attach two units together or attach it to the wall for tipping safety. The holes are already there in the perfect places! I did, however, use my drill and drilled little pilot holes up underneath the tabletop after I had it all in place just to make it easier to get the screws in. But it was so easy!
And with the addition of some darling storage bins (mostly from Target) it just kept getting better and better!
As a bonus, I don’t have to be stressing all of the time about ruining my work surface… first of all, this is meant to be used as a kitchen table so it is very durable. But secondly, if it does get ruined to the point of being unusable, for $30 I can get an ENTIRELY NEW ONE and attach it easily using 4 screws. Yay! The last thing I wanted to be doing is babying my work area. Now I don’t have to AT. ALL.
Let me know if you have any questions and also shoot me an email if you make one yourself… I’d love to see pictures of how you are using it!
Great idea, I love the white. Thanks for the details hiw to make this. I save the brown or white packing paper from Amazon or whatever shipment. I spread those out for projects so and hot glue, tacky glue, etc . Get on there. I also save that when I spray baste when sewing.
I love it! I just put it together today!
Do you think it’s sturdy enough for a heat press!
Thanks so much for posting this…I’ve been looking for some sort of reasonably priced table to use for rotary cutting and pressing in my summer home…….this is perfect and I’ll bed building one!
This is just what I need. Wondering about the dimensions of table top surface. I will use it to measure vintage clothing and/or to measure fabric. Thanks!
The table top is 29.5 x 59 inches . Hope that helps!
Thank you so much for posting this. I live in Ireland and don’t think Ikea sell that particular Kallak shelving unit here, do you think it would work with another kaplan shelving unit.
For sure! Just be sure to get one that is the right height and it should look great!
DOES IT MATTER ABOUT THE HEIGHT SO MUCH IF i BUY THE ADJUSTABLE LEGS. HEIGHT WOULD BE 77CMS WHEN I place shelf horizontally and 147 cms wide thanks so much for your help
Maria Fennell
The adjustable legs are great so the height doesn’t matter so much for the legs but just make sure the entire thing is a good workable height for what you want to use it for! Good luck Maria!
I saw this on Pinterest and now am looking at it on your site. I absolutely LOVE this. Do you think it’s do-able but with wheels so that it can be rolled out of the way?
Seriously…. I”m re-doing a spare bedroom to be an office/craft room and I think this IS IT!!
Hi Jennifer! I totally think you could add wheels to this! The legs are adjustable in height so you could shorten them as you move it and then lengthen them again when you were done rolling it. I think it would be great!
I love your creativity with this workspace. I maybe taking a trip to my local Ikea. My son took his bedroom triple dresser, now I have room to spread out.
I love this idea. I am thinking about using it as a homeschooling desk. I am just curious on the demensions of the bottom cube holes. Would they hold a crate that is 13 1/2″ wide x 10 1/2″ tall x 15 1/2″ deep?
The height of those cube spaces at the bottom are just under 13″ in height. Bummer!
