DIY Gold Christmas Decor
Earlier this week I shared my Christmas Mantel and was so excited about the positive feedback I got from it! I am always happy when others like the same things that I do. Today I thought I’d share more details about how I put it together, what projects I did to create it, etc. It is perfect because the theme for this month’s 10 on the 10th blog hop is GOLD! Yay! A can of gold metallic spray paint is the key, I’ll just put that out there right now. 🙂
First I will tell you about the “Comfort and Joy” banner which super easy to make and one of my favorite elements of the whole thing. Here is what you’ll need to make one yourself:
- Wooden Letters (spelling out whatever you want, really)
- Gold Metallic Spray Paint
- Oval wood plaque (if you want to recreate my “and” part of the banner)
- Wood stain
- Vinyl lettering in white of the word “and”
- Wide White Grosgrain Ribbon
- Twine
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Mod Podge
STEP ONE: Spray paint your letters gold. The fun part! 🙂
STEP TWO: Stain your wood plaque, allow to dry and coat with mod podge. Apply “and” to plaque and trim vinyl as needed.
STEP THREE: Hot glue letters to ribbon as you wrap twine around ribbon between each letter. This is optional, of course, but I love the little detail it added to the whole thing. Wrap twine around ribbon and hot glue “and” plaque to hang as well. Hang banner!
My very favorite part of the whole thing, which was a total experiment, was my spray painted gold Christmas lights! I had no idea how they would turn out and they turned out fantastic! I used the larger Christmas lights like these. Basically I just unscrewed all of the light bulbs and set them aside. I then tore paper towels into 2×2 inch squares and stuffed one in each socket to protect from the spray paint. Then I took the wire out to my backyard and hung it from a nail and set to work spray painting! The paint dried incredibly fast on the wire and I was done in about 10 minutes. I screwed all of the lights back in and was done! Easy! I can’t even tell you how many people have asked where I got the gold Christmas lights!
And finally, I needed a little somethin-somethin to make it so my white deer head (bought at Target last year) stand out from my white background. When I was at Home Depot I had spotted and picked up a couple of these wood rounds for about $5 each. I knew I would eventually figure out something fun to do with them and this was my chance! All I did was stain my wood (same color that I used on the banner) and allow to dry, tape it off in 2″ stripes and then spray painted it gold, of course! 🙂 Doing all of this spray painting at once made all of this go rather quickly, by the way. I LOVE this little element of the overall design… modern and fresh! I’m guessing this won’t be the last time I use one of these wooden rounds either. I love it!
So there you have it! Some easy ways I added the super on trend color of gold into my mantel this year! I love it and was so glad I had some little boxwood topiaries and wreath on hand to add to it. It all came together so well!
Pick yourself up a can of gold spray paint and transform something this holiday season… it’s the best!
I’m pretty much obsessed with it all! I LOVE the banner and I love the wooden round piece behind the reindeer! So FABULOUS and now I want it all! 🙂
Thanks Courtney! I know YOU can make it all with how crafty you are! 🙂
The BEST mantle I’ve seen this year! Love it!!
I just had to stop and say I love these lights!!! Sooo pretty! Can’t wait to paint mine now
Thanks Ali! Aren’t they great? So easy too! Good luck and thanks for stopping by and leaving a little comment love! Love your site!
That gold wood round is such a fantastic way to pop white decor off a white wall. I can think of some other wood pieces I’ve seen around hardware stores that might work too… Now I’ll have to go try it out!

I am obsessed with your white reindeer head. Where can I get one? LOVE IT!!! And thanks for posting. I love the gold letters idea.
Wow….painting the lights…what a great idea! LOVE IT!!!!
I love this idea of spray painting the lights! I wanted to ask where you got your lights from?
Just from Hobby Lobby! They are the larger bulb ones because I thought they would look better and also I needed some that were easy to remove the bulbs to spray paint!
I loved your spray painted lights when I spotted them, so I decided to try them myself and have to say I’m really bummed they didn’t turn out. I did everything you did and when I screwed all of the lights back in and plugged it in – no luck :/ I have the same lights, same strategy, etc. Any ideas? I am super upset it didn’t work.
Elsa, I have no idea what could have happened! I do find Christmas lights to be very fickle though. Like, if one little thing gets off then the entire strand doesn’t work. I’m sorry that happened!
I experienced the same thing as Elsa! Dang! And the actual wire part stayed sticky… never quite got completely dry. And the lights didn’t work. Sigh. I was so looking forward to it, too. 🙁
What brand spray paint did you use? I think that could be the difference!
I was wondering how well the gold paint stayed on the christmas lights, and if you used a particular kind of spray paint? I’ve been reading that the paint sometimes rubs off of light strands and I’d love to know what your experience was. Thanks!
Hi Liz! I just used Krylon Metallic Gold spray paint and it has held up amazingly well! No rubbing off or anything!
Hi Landee,
I really love everything you did here! I would like to recreate what you did with spray painting the lights gold. So you essentially just hung them up and sprayed them?
Yes! I also stuffed a little piece of paper towel into each socket after removing the bulb to prevent any spray paint from getting in there. It was surprisingly easy and the spray paint has stayed on well!
