A Finished Basement: The Kitchenette
From this view you can see how the kitchenette is there off to the left. It leads out to the backyard through the sliding glass door. One of my FAVORITE details we added was to wrap one of the steel support beams in wood rather than just drywall it in. I LOVE IT!! Can you image how blah it would be there if that were simply drywalled and painted the ceiling color? It didn’t cost any extra either. Look around your basement if you’re just getting started and see if there is a place to do this! My contractor simply mitered the edges of a couple 1x10s and a 1×6 and assembled them all together around the beam.
We got the “wood” ceramic tiles from Floor & Decor and they are called Kivu Ceniza. At $1.59/sq foot it can’t be beat on value! They are a grey tone but with some warmth in there too so it was a great choice for what I was going for in the basement.
We ordered the cabinets, again from HomeDepot.com at a fraction of the price their kitchen design center wanted! When I sat down with them I told them I needed 8 feet of base cabinents (minus a space for the mini fridge) and the two glass cabinets for the fireplace surround in the family room they came up with $3000! Wha?? I don’t think so. So we ordered from their Eurostyle Amsterdam Collection on line and could not be happier with them!
I also got my hardware from Home Depot as well. I thought about going gold/aged brass but in the end decided my happy modern little space needed some black! I couldn’t be happier! You can get the knobs here and the cup pulls here. And THIS is the faucet we chose for our little sink. I love it!
And with the addition of the highly affordable table and chairs from Ikea, it is now a functional space where we can eat and play games. And those fun orange-borderline-coral curtains? From Target, of course! You can get them here! I ordered the 95″ ones to go all the way to the ceiling (only available online).
I wish I could remember what the countertop is exactly. Our contractor had a buddy that brought over samples and I chose one. That’s all I can remember… oops! It’s some kind of marble composite and it’s a really pretty sparkly grey. We used it in the bathroom as well.
Speaking of the bathroom! The shower in there is the nicest one in the whole house! Click NEXT PAGE to see all the details!
I just wanted to say that I absolutely hate that green sidebar on the left with all the social media icons! It covers part of the words and is so annoying that I don’t want to bother reading the rest of your blog. If you could move your wording over just a little it would be soooo much better. I had an ecommerce website for years, and I would have wanted to know if something like this kept people away from my site. And just in case it matters I’m using Chrome.
Anita
Thanks for letting me know Anita! I’ll look into that.
Read on a bigger device or flip it to landscape or read from a standard computer and it reads just fine.
Landee!!!! I am DYING!!! Will you PLEASE come do my basement?! It’s gorgeous! I love everything about it, but especially the fire place! Also, I found this post via your newsletter – I just want you to know how much I love it! 🙂
xo,
Camille
Oh my goodness you’re the nicest! Thanks Camille!
I’m in the middle of a carpet decision too and googled the Gorrono Ranch Victorian and your post came up. I’m so glad to see the carpet there. I am still pretty undecided but it looks so gorgeous in your basement. I’m leaning toward either Victorian, Peaceful or Vintage which is a silvery gray but so hard to decide. Anyway just wanted to let you know that it looks gorgeous! 🙂
Oh yay! Yes, we love Victorian but what I really love is how plush and soft it is on bare feet. I was not expecting it to be so nice! Plus you can’t beat Life Proof! Good luck on your decision!
Where did you get your couch?
Hi Mindy!
It was a custom ordered couch from a store called Wow Furniture. We could pick the arm style, the configuration and the fabric. Because it was a narrow but long space we needed to go custom! Thanks for stopping by!
I’m in the denver area and would love to get the number of your contractor. Would you mind sending it to me? Thx!
Hi Katie! I’ll send you an email. Thanks!
Where did you get your couch pillows? Love em!
They are a mix but mostly from Caitlin Wilson and Minted!
Wow! Your space turned out great! We are at the drywall phase of our basement finish so reading your posts are a big help in preparing me for the next steps. At the moment, I’m trying to find a good bar fridge. So many are glass front, but noticed you went with a stainless door. May I ask what brand you installed and how you like it. Thanks for the feedback!
Love it! Love it!
I must confess this is over delivering.
I was carefully waiting to see the final look before I comment.
You rock! like a boss Landee.
Thanks for keeping to your promise and posting the finished project.
Simply gorgeous Landee!
I am going to steal a lot of your ideas for our basement refinish right down to the same tiles and color scheme!
We are south of DC and our estimates around here were in the $40K range, but we are not including a spare bedroom. You’ve now got me thinking about a fireplace and kitchenette!
I may have missed it, but I am wondering what fireplace it was that you used.
We’re in the initial planning stages of finishing our basement and google brought me to your blog. I’m definitely keeping a few of your ideas in mind! May I ask what the square footage of your finished space is? Thanks!
I think the finished area is about 1200 square feet and we left 300 unfinished for storage. Good luck with the project! It’s the best thing we’ve ever done!
We are moving to Aurora and would love to finish our basement. I would love to get the contractors contact information.
Your blog posts have been incredibly helpful. We are just at the quoting stage of our basement project and I’m loving the tips here! I’m tempted to go dark on the doors too! Thanks to Pinecrest from bringing me to your blog!
