It’s summertime and you know what that means, don’t you??  Lots of “ARE WE THERE YET?” coming from the backseats of minivans and SUVs all over the country.  It seems that nearly every family hops in the car at some point during these summer months and heads out on an adventure.  Sometimes these road trips are 3 hours and sometimes they are 33 hours.  I have to admit that today’s post is somewhat selfish in that I am heading out on one of these adventures myself (only 8 hours though) and will have a car full of teens and tweens!  My kids are old enough now that they tend to entertain themselves by listening to music, watching movies or reading books but every once in a while I start thinking that we really ought to interact more on these long trips.  I know, what a concept, huh? 🙂  I mean think about it…they are trapped in a car with their parents for hours on end and I think it is a fantastic opportunity to get to know each other better.  So I started looking around for some great interactive road trip games and began compiling some ideas.  It seemed like a lot of the ideas out there were for elementary school age kids or younger so I focused my list on ideas for older kids (I told you this was a selfish endeavor!).   So if you have some older kids that you want to connect with on your next road trip, today is your lucky day!

I made a few printables to make it easier on all of us.  First, I compiled a bunch of games I thought my (and your!) kids would like and created this cute printable for you to print out and tuck in your purse.  Pull it out on your next trip, pick a game and see how your kids react!  I bet they will totally get into them!  Some are silly.  Some need some brain power or big imaginations.  All are lots of fun!

You can download this as a JPEG HERE or a PDF HERE.

As I was researching for some fun games I came across several sites with questions for the popular game “Would You Rather…?”  This is a game that anyone can play, anywhere, at any time where one person asks another a series of questions where the choices are nearly impossible to decide on.  Such as “Would you rather cure cancer but be poor or have $100,000,000?” These questions are a great way to start conversations as people love to explain why they would choose one or the other.  The only rule is you HAVE to choose one of the choices!  I compiled a long list of questions and put them in a printable so all you need to do is print it out, cut them apart put them in a container of some kind.

Road Trip Games for Teens and Tweens | landeelu.com Tons of great ideas to get you interacting with your teens as well as an awesome DIY Would You Rather Game!

I have had these little green Ball mason jars for a while and was excited for a reason to use them!  But any container will do… even a sandwich size baggie!   However if you do want to put them in a jar or other container of some kind (and make it stinkin’ cute), I created a round tag (in a few different sizes) for you to stick on the top.  This would be a great gift for someone too!  All the questions are teen/tween friendly but feel free to edit as you cut them apart if you want. 🙂

Download the Would You Rather Questions HERE and the circle topper JPEG HERE or PDF HERE.

Cousin Carnival Party Idea: So many fun DIY games you can make out of what you have around the house! landeelu.com #summeractivity #backyardparty #yardgames #partyideas

Are you hosting a family reunion this summer?  Or are you in charge of an event where you need to entertain a bunch of silly kids?  Is a backyard party in your future? Today I am sharing a “Cousin Carnival” my sister-in-law and I put on for all of our neices and nephews that only required some time and some creativity with things we would find around the house!  It was hours of entertainment and the kids loved it!  If you’re looking for summer activity ideas I’ve got you covered!

Cousin Carnival Party Idea

Decorations were party bunting (found at local party store) and balloons!  Shelly also made signs labeling all the booths by applying vinyl to poster board.  Prizes were inexpensive things from the dollar store/party store and candy.

Every kid got a bag to hold their various carnival goodies.  Attached were their tickets (it “cost” two tickets per booth) and inside was a water bottle with their name on it (vinyl) and their reunion t-shirt (made by printing on iron-on paper and ironing it on–easy!).

Here are the kids running up the hill to where we had set up the carnival booths.  They had their bags in hand and were rearing to go, lemme tell you.

Here’s a quick run-down of the booths we did.
Balloon Darts
Made by putting the tied end of an inflated balloon through peg board and taping it on the back to keep it in place.  The kids then threw darts in an attempt to pop two balloons to get their prize.
Cousin Carnival: Summer Activity Idea! | landeelu.com Would be perfect if you're hosting a family reunion this summer!
Ring Toss
The kids needed to ring a wide-mouth mason jar lid ring over a bottle of soda to claim the prize here.  They then got to drink their soda they won later with dinner.

Bean Bag Ladder Toss
Label each rung of a step ladder with points and let the kids try to get as many points as possible by throwing bean bags between the rungs.  Easiest set up ever and the kids loved it!

Water Balloon Bobbing
Fill up a kiddie pool or plastic bin and some water balloons and let the kids go for it.  This is not as easy as it looks but lots of fun!  It was nice to have a water event for the kids to cool down in too.
Cousin Carnival: Summer Activity Idea! | landeelu.com Would be perfect if you're hosting a family reunion this summer!
Photo Booth
We gathered up some props and let the kids put on whatever they wanted and took their pictures.  It was hilarious to see what they came up with and each kid was totally different!
Ball Throw
By taping a floatie to a garbage can we instantly created a carnival booth (it’s amazing what you can come up with by raiding the garage)!  Stand back and see how many balls you can get through that little hole.
Cousin Carnival: Summer Activity Idea! | landeelu.com Would be perfect if you're hosting a family reunion this summer!
We also had a “Carnival Walk” (not pictured) which ran like a cake walk only you won a prize if you landed on the right spot rather than a cake.  Other ideas we have done in the past are a small craft area (foam visors, popsicle stick picture frames, etc) and a cupcake decorating table.  We also had a slip-n-slide going for an added activity and a way for the kids to cool down.
The final event was our Carnival Dinner.  We put out some carnival-y food (corn dogs, french fries, watermelon, chips, etc) and sat down and ate together out on the back porch.
Cousin Carnival: Summer Activity Idea! | landeelu.com Would be perfect if you're hosting a family reunion this summer!
It was such a great day and the kids absolutely loved it!  This is now something they look forward to every summer.  Memories were made, relationships grew stronger and fun was had by all (even the adults!).
Cousin Carnival: Summer Activity Idea! | landeelu.com Would be perfect if you're hosting a family reunion this summer!
The best part is that this backyard party can be as elaborate or as simple as you want to make it!  If you have a group of bored kids hanging around your house this summer, throw together a little carnival!  We are thinking that next year we may even put some of the older cousins in charge of a booth or two.  They were really wanting to help this year, so why not, right?
Have a wonderful, memory-making summer!

Show your child’s teacher how amazing they are with a fun End of Year gift!

Today I’m sharing another idea for showing your appreciation to your child’s teacher at the end of the year (you can see my other idea for a Target gift card HERE)!

I am a big fan of giving gift cards since they are small (easy for the teacher to get home) and useful (teachers LOVE gift cards!).  But my creative side cringes at the blah-ness of a regular ole’ gift card.  I’m sure many of you can relate here.

So here’s a cute little way to give a gift card using a small tin bucket I found in the dollar section at Target!

End of Year Teacher Gift Idea: Bucket List! #teachergift #teacherappreciation #giftidea #thankyougift

Everyone loves checking off things from their bucket list, right?  Side note: if your child has already gone skydiving I guess you need to find a red marker and check that one off as well.  🙂
(some affiliate links below.  See here for my full disclosure policy)

Here’s all you need to make this Teacher Gift Idea:

  • small bucket
  • Bucket List tag printed out and trimmed (K-6th grades available), download HERE.
  • black cardstock for matting the tag (optional)
  • corner rounder (optional)
  • hole punch
  • ribbons, twine, etc. for embellishment
  • filler for bucket (crinkle paper shreds, candy, etc)
Then you just need to put it all together as pictured and you’re all set!
It’s easy, satisfies the creative side of gift-giving AND you give the teacher something he/she actually wants!  Win-win-win!

WANT ANOTHER TEACHER GIFT IDEA?  Here are TWO!

Teacher Appreciation Gift Idea... every teacher LOVES Target! Cute way to give a gift card.

DIY Mason Jar Salt and Pepper Shakers - what a cute gift idea! #saltandpepper #masonjarcraft #giftidea #salt&peppershakers

I’m one of those people that puts salt & pepper on anything in sight.  Have you ever put pepper on your fries?  It’s amaaaayzing.  Really.  You gotta try it.  Anyway, I’ve been wanting to make a set of salt & pepper shakers for a while and I wanted them to be big enough that I wouldn’t have to refill them every week!  Some of those sets are so teeny tiny that they hold, like, three shakes and then they’re empty!  Yeah, no.   So when I spotted these adorable little 6oz. mason jars I knew how I’d make some that would hold enough salt and pepper to douse all the potatoes in Idaho.  Done & done!

Want to make some?  Here’s what you’ll need:

DIY Mason Jar Salt and Pepper Shakers {landeelu.com}

  • 2 6oz mason jars and lids
  • “S” and “P” letter stickers or vinyl letters
  • 2″ circles of scrapbook paper (I used a 2″ punch)
  • Mod Podge
  • paint (I used chalk paint because I had some around but regular acrylic craft paint would work too!)
  • foam paint brush
  • hammer & nail
  • rough sand paper
  • painter’s tape or masking tape

STEP ONE:  Tape off top of jar and apply letter stickers.  Paint over entire jars with paint.  I applied two coats of paint, allowing them to dry completely between coats.

STEP TWO:  Remove letter stickers and painter’s tape and distress jars (if desired) with rough sandpaper.  If you’re worried about the paint chipping off more later, you can spray jars with a protective clear coat to seal them.  Be careful not to get any spray on the inside of the jars where your salt & pepper will be.

DIY Mason Jar Salt and Pepper Shakers {landeelu.com}STEP THREE: Mod Podge the 2″ circle of scrapbook paper onto top of lid and allow to dry completely.

DIY Mason Jar Salt and Pepper Shakers {landeelu.com}STEP FIVE: Fill jars with salt and pepper, put the lids back on and you’re done!

I think these would be so cute in any color you would like!  I decided to keep them neutral so I could embellish them a little with twine and orange berries at Thanksgiving or red baker’s twine wrapped around the lid for Valentine’s Day or whatever I can dream up!

This was a super easy project that took about an hour start to finish.  I love a good mason jar craft and I love how my new salt & pepper shakers turned out!  Now I need to make some fries. 🙂

If you’re looking for an easy but AMAZING accent wall idea this is what you’ve been searching for!

I recently did a little makeover on my master bedroom (what a difference!) and one of the things I wanted to do was make the wall behind my bed an accent wall of some sort.  Nothing crazy, but I did want it to stand out a bit there behind my headboard.

DIY Accent Wall Idea

I contemplated all kinds of options…. shiplap, wallpaper, a different color, etc.  Shiplap seemed like a lot of work (#lazy) and how long will that trend last?  Wallpaper also seemed like a lot of work, messy and a pain to change out later.  Painting that wall a different color would have been easy enough but I am not totally digging that trend as much as I used to.

Super easy and fun accent wall idea to liven up a space just using a GOLD SHARPIE! #accentwall #homedecor #budgetdecor #masterbedroom #interiordesign

Then I remembered my friend Mandi doing something with a gold sharpie paint pen so I looked on her blog and it was exactly what I wanted!  Her DIY Gold Sharpie Wall is truly genius and I couldn’t wait to try it for my new master bedroom.

I didn’t even want to try to “make it my own” by messing with the measurements or anything because I loved it so much just the way she did it.  She has a nice graphic showing the spacing on her blog and some tips if you want to go check it out.

Basic Instructions for this Gold Sharpie Accent Wall Idea

(This post may contain affiliate links)

  1. Gather up a gold Sharpie Paint Pen (water-based so you can paint over it later without any issues) and a level.
  2. Using your level, pencil on your horizontal lines 18″ apart.
  3. Go back and go over lines (still using a straight edge, of course) with the gold sharpie paint pen.
  4. Starting at top line (for me this was the edge where my wall met the ceiling), make a small pencil mark 6″ from wall.
  5. Then on the second line down, make a small pencil mark 12″ from the wall.
  6. Third line down, make a mark 6″ from wall.
  7. Continue going back and forth between 6″ and 12″ until you’ve reached the bottom.
  8.  Next, go along each line horizontally and mark 12″ from the previous mark.  This creates the diamond shape.
  9. Now simply go back and use a straight edge to connect the marks using your sharpie paint pen!

Here’s a quick video showing the whole process… it really only took me about 2 hours once I was at the sharpie-ing stage!

It’s the perfect touch I was looking for to my master bedroom makeover!  Thank goodness for genius people with genius ideas.  You really need to try this accent wall idea out, you will love it!  Modern, stylish, subtle and perfect.

Easy accent wall idea! Gold sharpie paint pen and a level is all you need!

Today I am sharing a project/idea that is near and dear to my heart.
About 5 years ago, my MIL approached me and asked me if I thought there was any way I could figure out how to do some kind of a family magazine.  Her brother has been putting together a HUGE family “newsletter” for her extended family called the Thompson Tribune for years and years.  Mary (my MIL) was wondering if I could start doing one for just our immediate family.  She also had the cute idea of making it more like a fun gossip magazine rather than your standard family newsletter.  We decided to call it US Yearly (a play on the magazine US Weekly) and we usually write our news up in a reporter like style… “sources say” and “Landee was overheard saying”… you know, stuff like that.  It makes for an entertaining read along with documenting what we were all up to that year.
But I’m getting ahead of myself…
My main issue was to find a company that would print it out like a magazine.  I wanted it to be soft covered, stapled down the fold, glossy pages, etc.  After doing some research I came across lulu.com.  They had just the services I was looking for!  They offer a variety of book sizes and types but one of them was the soft cover magazine style I wanted.  They required jpeg or PDF images for their pages so, with remedial photoshop skills anyone can make one!  You just need to know how to add photos and text to an 8.5×11 blank photoshop canvas.  You can also create pages using the design site Canva.  User-friendly and fun!
We’ve been doing them for about 5 years now and I gotta say, they just keep getting better and better!
Here is the basic outline of any given US Yearly Issue:

THE COVER

1. Cover:  I have the most fun putting these together.  These are two of my favorite covers I’ve created so far.

THE INSIDE PAGES

2. Letter From the Editor:  Written by Yours Truly.  Not a big deal but a little blurb, usually related to the cover story.  My musings on whatever I want really… basically self-indulgent nonsense.  The rest of the family tolerates it.  🙂
3.  Throughout the magazine I will put in collages of family get-togethers we have had throughout the year.  These are nice for when you need two particular pages to be facing each other so you need a random filler page and things like that.  Not to mention that you just want these fun events in the magazine!

4. Anniversaries:  This is an idea I stole from Mary’s brother’s newsletter.  We all write in memories that happened 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 years ago in our family.  They range from big things like “Reid and Shelly get married” to not-so-big things like “Chrissi voted ‘Biggest Spaz’ in the 8th Grade.” And since not many of us were around 50, 60 and 70 years ago, we get to learn a lot about Grandpa and Grandma’s childhoods and early married life!  This is one of my favorite pages in the magazine each year.
5.  Main Body of Magazine:  Each person gets their very own page!  We try to do 5-10 photos of each person along with a write-up of what they had been up to that year.  I do the adults in order… oldest sibling and spouse facing each other, next oldest sibling and spouse facing each other, etc.  Then I do the grandkids in order of their age as well.  It’s just easier that way.  I have one SIL who does her own pages and sends them to me.  The rest send me photos and the text and I put their pages together for them.

6.  More random pages of family events as needed…. maybe you recognize the Cousin Carnival?  🙂
Create a yearly family news magazine to keep family in touch from all over the world! It's a family treasure for sure. #familyhistory #familynewsletter #familymagazine #selfpublish
7.  Every year I have everyone answer the same 5 questions.  It has been funny to see how the answers have changed over the years!  Oh, and I had them text me “silly faces” for this section this year.  I do the photos a little different every time.
Create a yearly family news magazine to keep family in touch from all over the world! It's a family treasure for sure. #familyhistory #familynewsletter #familymagazine #selfpublish
The questions are:
1. What is your proudest accomplishment from this past year?
2.  What is your favorite way to waste time?
3. What is your latest obsession?
4. What is something new you tried this year?
5. What is your favorite thing to do with your family?

EXTRA IDEAS

Other things we have done but don’t do every time:
  • Our second issue was dedicated to my FIL’s mother who was turning 90 that year.  Everyone wrote up a memory about Grandma Dot for the magazine.  She loved it, of course!
  • One year we had everyone write up any childhood memory.  These are a great read and our kids love them.
  • The first year I did a Crossword Puzzle Quiz in the back, drawing the answers from the magazine content but no one wanted to write in their magazines so I haven’t done it since.  🙂

SOME THINGS I’VE LEARNED AFTER FIVE YEARS:

1.  Ask for news and photos early and work on the pages as they come in.  It’s a big job if you try and do it all at once.
2. Take a lot of photos throughout the year!   It definitely helps that I know how to work a camera and that I have an AMAZING professional photographer for a SIL.  I then have many beautiful photographs to work with which makes the magazine just that much better.  But I believe ANY photos would look great put together in this way!
3.  Simplify the individual pages!  For the first issue I was addicted to digital scrapbook papers and embellishments.  Each page was a “work of art”…. but now, they are already looking dated.  I now have all pages be on white backgrounds and the only thing I play with is the fonts.  This makes the pages come together so much easier and they look more like that classic magazine style.
4. Make sure your pages are at least 300ppi.  I had a bad experience there with low resolution once.
5.  Get started now!  I am so grateful that we started this magazine when we did.  Look at how much these two have changed in 5 issues!

Create a yearly family news magazine to keep family in touch from all over the world! It's a family treasure for sure. #familyhistory #familynewsletter #familymagazine #selfpublish
Plus, since the first issue we’ve had 4 babies born in to the family and my MIL has gone through fighting and surviving breast cancer.  I am so glad we have it all documented for future generations.
Hopefully this has inspired you in some way!  Let me know if you have any questions!
