If you’re looking for an easy and adorable DIY wall decor idea, this post is for you! Keep reading to see how you can create inexpensive and totally custom wall art by using beautiful decorative papers, mod podge and a blank canvas!
The finishing touches of a room are where I often get bogged down. I can pick out furniture and even things like pillows and curtains but when it comes to the details? I sometimes want to just give up! I especially get frustrated when it comes to wall decor. How much is too much? Why can’t I find anything in the perfect size and perfect colors and perfect style? How many more stores do I need to go to?? It can be so frustrating!
Well, my friends, I have found the perfect solution… make it yourself!! One of the many perks of DIYing things is that you get to make it EXACTLY how you want it. It is the same with wall decor! Not to even mention how much money you can save. Plus it’s so fun and you get to exercise a little creativity… what could be better?
My daughter had recently wanted a little “room makeover.” She turned 12 and had outgrown her more “babyish” bedding. After looking around she found this beautiful bedding online from PBTeen. This bedding was perfectly grown up (but not too much!) and she instantly fell in love. Her other bedding leaned more coral and this is more dusty pink so this required some switching out of the accessories in the room as well.
Her one request is that we create a fun gallery wall and I was happy to deliver! I had a lot of quirky and “teenager-y” items for the wall but I had one space that I was struggling to fill. That’s when I decided to just create the perfect piece of art! I had a blank 16×20 canvas that I had down in my crafting supplies and I was excited to finally have a project for it.
I also had some beautiful decorative papers from A.C. Moore‘s paper crafting line Love Nicole. These are available at all A.C. Moore stores and I particularly loved this Aquarelle paper pad collection. Even though I wasn’t going to use any purple I was inspired by that herringbone pattern in the upper right hand corner! It is the perfect pattern for this DIY wall decor! If you’d like to create your own DIY wall art here are the step-by-step instructions!
DIY WALL DECOR TUTORIAL
STEP ONE: Download the herringbone template I created >>>HERE<<<
STEP TWO: Print out herringbone template on cardstock and using an Xacto knife and straight edge, cut out the herringbone shapes to create a stencil. STEP THREE: Lightly trace the shape onto the decorative paper you choose and then cut shapes out with scissors. Cut out as many as you need to fill your canvas and in as many different beautiful papers as you want!
STEP FOUR: Lay out the papers on your canvas in the pattern that you want. Get creative!
STEP FIVE: Picking up one piece at a time, apply mod podge under the paper and then lay back down. Continue until all of your pieces have been “mod podged” down onto the canvas and allow to dry completely.
STEP SIX: Using your Xacto knife and straight edge again, cut off any excess paper that hangs over the edge of canvas.
STEP SEVEN: Apply another coat (or two) of mod podge over entire surface of canvas. Allow to dry completely between coats and your DIY wall decor is done! It’s so fun to mix and match patterns and colors and get creative! You can lay out this herringbone pattern in a TON of different ways so enjoy the process!
It is definitely the perfect touch to her “more grown up” bedroom and she absolutely loves her new gallery wall!
