This DIY St. Patrick’s Day sign comes together in a snap with the help of a vinyl stencil!
I am currently planning out my St. Patrick’s Day mantel decor and the only thing I have set in stone is that I HAD to re-create the LOVE sign I made for my Valentine’s Day mantel! I was so sad to take it down! So I designed a LUCKY St. Patrick’s Day sign and I may love it even more, you guys.
Because: STRIPES
I’m also going to show you a little more detail on how to apply a vinyl stencil as well since I received a few questions on that.
I have a long love affair with the wood rounds you can purchase at Home Depot or Lowes. They are perfect for DIY signs! A darling shape all ready to go for you with no prep work. So here’s what you’ll need if you would like to make a sign like this yourself:
Materials Needed for DIY St. Patrick’s Day Sign:
(some links are affiliate links for your convenience, click here for full disclosure)
- 17″ Wood Round (I purchased mine at Home Depot)
- White acrylic craft paint
- Green acrylic craft paint
- Painter’s Tape (I used the 1.88″ width)
- foam brushes
- Krylon Gold Spray Paint
- LUCKY Stencil (you can create one with your Silhouette or Cricut or purchase one in my Etsy shop HERE) For the LUCK I used the Hello Sunshine font–one of my faves!– which you can get HERE
- For the Y, in LUCKY I actually decided to use the Y from the Hello Beautiful font which you can get HERE. It’s just a matter of personal preference to have it a little “loopier” or not!
STEP ONE: Paint wood round with white craft paint and allow to dry completely. Then, apply painter’s tape in stripes. I used one piece as a spacer and moved it down as I went. It helped to keep the stripes even and straight. Way easier than measuring and marking with a pencil or something (especially with a weird width like 1.88″).
STEP TWO: Paint stripes with green craft paint. A couple of light coats will do the trick!
STEP THREE: Remove painter’s tape while 2nd coat is still wet. Then allow to dry completely.
for tips on how to apply a vinyl stencil and finish your Lucky sign!
I am just so in love with your Valentine Day “Love” board. I
Bought your stencil and I’m so sad to take it down. Please tell me you have one for Easter/spring! I’m ready to order when you are!!
I’ll be getting one ready! And I’m open to suggestions on what you want on it! 🙂
How did you cut a 17″ circle on the Silhouette?
I actually have a 24″ wide vinyl cutter that I use. If you have a Silhouette I suggest just cutting the lettering (which is probably only about 12″ wide and applying that, rather than using a stencil. Or, cut the wording and remove the lettering as a stencil and then, after you apply the stencil to the round wood where you want it, mask off the rest of the circle with painter’s tape before you spray paint!
I am using a cricut with SCAL 2. What size would I do to fit the circle? Mat size is 12×24…..Do you just make it 17″ long? thanks for the help
Hi Lorrie! I have a vinyl cutter that is 24″ wide so my circle is 17 inches in diameter. However, you could make the LUCKY word a bit smaller (as large as your cutter will allow, however) and then mask off the rest of the area with paper or something when you go to spray paint the stencil. I hope that helps!
I would love a sign for spring with a scriptural reference like “He is Risen”. I can’t wait to see what you come up with. 🙂
Sooo awesome! Love it!
Holly 🙂
My green paint keeps peeling up whenever I peel up my vinyl. Do you have a trick to prevent that from happening?
Hey Jen! What kind of paint are you using? And are you letting it cure overnight before applying the vinyl? That might help. But honestly, that might happen a little bit no matter what and so I am a big fan of going back and touching up the paint wherever I need to. Good luck!
This may be too late but I have found that using a hairdryer on low setting heats up the glue on the vinyl just enough to have it not be so tacky that it pulls up paint underneath it. I hope that helps!
I love the valentine one ad well but really want and am trying to buy the lucky ones through that hello sunshine site. I made an account but I’m not sure what I’m doing or how to find that one particular. Help
I love the Lucky sign. Do you sell them pre-made? and if so, how much?
I bought the font you said the lucky was in and the Y is different in your stencil file. Do you know why?
I think you can access the other Y if you can get to the “glyphs” panel of the font. Do you have a program that allows you to do this?
Will it open in silhouette? I do have photoshop elements but I am not quite sure how to do that. Do you have a svg file you would let me purchase?
HI Catherine, I emailed you so check your inbox! Thanks! Landee
This is too cute! I’m doing a post on St. Patrick’s Day crafts, do you mind if I include this with a link back to your site?
Jamie, Yes you can! Thank you!
