I posted about my Winter Mantel earlier this week and today I’m excited to share my little “snowball garland” I made out of yarn pom poms! I’ve been wanting to try making yarn pom poms for a long time but hadn’t really had a chance to until now. I was always a little put off by the special “pom pom makers” people were buying and using or having to make themselves out of cardboard pieces. I’m a fan of crafting in as few steps as possible. So when I saw a few tutorials on how to make them using just your hands I jumped on board!
I sat and made all of these, one yarn pom pom after another, while playing games with my family. Yeah. It’s so easy you can multitask! Here is what you’ll need if you want to make some too!
- skein of yarn (I got the fluffiest whitest yarn I could find)
- scissors
- For a garland you’ll need an additional piece of twine (or you can use the same yarn) and a yarn needle (large eye)
STEP ONE: Put a 12″ piece of yarn between your pointer and middle finger then wrap yarn around those two fingers. The more yarn you use, the fluffier your snowball yarn pom pom will be.
STEP TWO: When you are done wrapping, bring the 12″ piece of yarn up and tie it around center of wrapped yarn and tie it as tight as you can with a double knot.
STEP THREE: Remove wrapped yarn from fingers and use scissors to cut loops on one side, and then the other, being careful to not cut the piece of yarn that ties it all together.
STEP FOUR: Trim yarn into a ball shape!
STEP FIVE: If making these into a garland, thread twine/yarn into a yarn needle and thread on desired amount of snowballs/yarn pom poms.
**Note: To make larger yarn pom poms, place 12″ piece of twine between middle and ring fingers and wrap yarn around entire hand. Follow rest of steps above.
I loved making this! I could have sat and made many many more but I ran out of yarn! This garland really did take up almost an entire skein of yarn, so keep that in mind when buying.
I love its soft addition to my Winter Mantel. It was just the “touch” I was looking for!
Hope you’re keeping warm this winter! Happy crafting!
Super cute! I’ve got something similar coming up, too!
