I spent this past weekend pulling out all of my Christmas stuff and am finally ready to share my Christmas Mantel for this year! I went cleaner and simpler than I ever have before and I must say, I love it.
My big project for this year’s mantel was my chalkboard tree art. I had seen this idea in the latest Matthew Mead Holiday magazine which is chock full of so many fabulous ideas. They had an old piece of slate that they used to create a chalk pine tree. Well, I didn’t just have an old piece of slate laying around so I had to figure out how to make this work.
Here’s how I did it:
1) Had Home Depot cut down a piece of MDF for me to about 24×30.
2) Painted the board red using craft paint.
3) Sanded edges of board using a heavy grit sand paper.
4) Using DecoArt’s Chalkboard Coating (which I found at Hobby Lobby), I turned it into a freaking chalkboard! Miracle!
5) Had a fun time pretending I was an artist and drawing my tree using chalk as my medium/muse (and trying to copy Matthew’s as closely as possible, of course). I love it as my focal point.
I then added my stockings, some ornaments in my glass vases, and the fun reindeer head that refused to stay on the shelf at Target and practically jumped into my cart! What could I do? 🙂
I’m definitely in the festive mood now! Are you all feeling it? Not to stress you out but there are only 20 more days until Christmas. 🙂

Love it! I really like the red and white. Great job on the tree chalk art…I admired that in the holiday mag too.
Ooooh. This is so festive. I love the chalkboard tree.
It looks great!
This is BEYOND fabulous! LOVE it!!
Love this Landee! You are so fabulously talented my friend. Even though I think that the dear heads are kind of creepy (this coming from the girl who has a real moose head in her garage) I really, really like yours! Awesome job my friend!
SO pretty – love the chalkboard tree – need to finish up my decorating!
I saw that chalkboard tree on Pinterest. It’s awesome! Love the ornaments in the glass – I did that in several places too.
Where did you get the stocking hangers? I put all my old glass insulators on my mantel and I need something simple to hang the stockings on like those.
Looks great! Love the colors! Would also love if you’d join our Countdown to Christmas link party! Hope to see you there! Have a great week! 🙂

You did a great job with the tree! It looks so artistic and gorgeous.
oohhh wonderful ornaments!
your mantel is beautiful- can you tell what you used to hang your stockings? I’ve been trying to come up with a solution to hang ours without buying those big bulky stocking hangers they sell (and I need 7!) thanks!
Looks great! Love the chalkboard tree art!
Can I just tell you how much I love your style of decorating? I spend way too much time looking for decor ideas on Pinterest…I should know by now to just go straight to your site! I love the beautiful simplicity!
I would love to know where you found the stocking hangars you use here.
Hi! I think I just got those at Target. I liked the simplicity of them. Thanks for stopping by!
