So you know that book “If You Give A Mouse a Cookie?” I had my own little version of that book this past week… it goes something like this.
If Landee wants to find an earring but can’t, she’ll have a bit of a meltdown.
After her meltdown she’ll decide she needs to make something to hold her jewelry.
After she makes her new jewelry organizer, she’ll hang it in her closet.
When she sees her new pretty jewelry organizer in her super lame, boring and messy closet, she’ll want to re-do everything in there to match her new jewelry organizer.
When it’s all said and done she’ll have thrown out or given away 4 giant trash bags of crap, ripped out a shelf, ripped out the carpet, repainted the entire closet, painted and installed new shelves, installed new flooring, painted and hung a new mirror, and put in a new light fixture.
And chances are, when she gets all that done, she’ll have found that missing earring.
So yeah, I’m a big believer in taking full advantage of myself when I get in these modes and boy did I this time!
Today I’ll be sharing the general overview of my fab new closet and then I’ll be sharing more details in later posts. So first up, let’s see some horrific BEFORE pictures, mmmkay? ::checking pride at the door because this is ridiculous::
So, um, I’m not really sure what to say about these pictures except… sorry? It was a complete disaster. Dumping ground. Catch-all. I could get about 2 feet in the door and then it was treacherous. Not exactly an ideal place to go into and get dressed in the morning. I should also clarify here that my husband and I have separate closets and his is much more orderly than mine. I really have no excuse here. This is just small amounts of laziness built up over 7 years. ::sigh::
But NOW, it’s looking like this!!!
Doesn’t my jewelry organizer look much more at home now?
It’s tough to get good photos of such a small space with no natural light, but I hope that your mind and piece all the images together to give you a sense of what it looks like now. You might just need to come over and see it in person! 🙂
Here is a good old Before & After shot, which are the best.
Needless to say I am in love with my new closet. My kids think it looks like The Gap now which I guess is a compliment? And my husband says I need to do his closet now because his looks terrible compared to mine now so I might be working on a more masculine version here in the near future. Yay!
Things worth noting:
1) I will say that 80% of this job was just cleaning out all of the old stuff that wasn’t wanted/needed anymore (which, as I mentioned, was 4 huge garbage can liners full). After I had done that I was tempted to stop because it already looked SO much better but I’m glad I muscled through and glitzed it up a little too!
2) I did this whole thing for around $525. That includes flooring, shelves, paint, light fixture, storage containers, etc. That might seem like a lot of money but it is NOTHING compared to having a professional closet company come in and do it for you. I’ve heard that can run you upwards of $10K for a walk-in closet like this! Wha? Until I’m making Beyonce money my closet is not where I’d be spending $10K. I can handle $525 on my Landee money though. 🙂
Thanks for stopping by!
I’m excited to share some of the projects that went into making this all come together here in the next little while so be sure to check back!
If you need me I’ll be hanging out in my closet (that’s not a joke. It’s now the nicest room in the house.).

Love the story!! You had me laughing. Closet looks amazing!! Glad you found your earring.
Now you deserve a cookie! I can’t wait to see how this unfolds – every last detail. LOVE IT!
I love your closet, it looks great! My closet is so dark and boring it needs a redo. Thanks for sharing and for the inspiration. I am new to blogging and your blog was one of the first I started to follow, thanks for the inspiration.

Your closet makeover is beautiful and organized. Please share where you got your light fixture. I love it!
You may have just solved my closet problems. I share a long funny shaped closet with my husband and we have been talking about redoing it for 10 years. Where did you find your shelving units? Those would work perfect for our space. This may just be the fire under me that I needed to get this project off the list.
Thanks,
Juli
Thank you, you guys! You are so nice.
Juliette, I got the light fixture at Lowe’s! Saw it. Loved it. Bought it!
Juli, I’ll be sharing more about those shelves in an upcoming post but I used the Billy bookcases (the 15″ deep ones) from IKEA. Very affordable & easy to put together! Good luck with your closet!
By looking at your closet we could be long lost sisters! Jealous you corralled yours, maybe I’ll get to at least clean mine out, after the kids go back to school next week!
WOW! such a gorgeous closet. So organized. If you get a chance, please link up to my link party: http://suburbsmama.blogspot.com/2013/08/sunday-linky-23.html
Awesome closet makeover! I bet it feels so much better in there now and probably helps with the start of your day to be in such a nice room!
Do you post instructions on how you installed the bookcases? I’d like to try it, but need instructions or a tutorial. Thanks
Hi Amy! I didn’t really do a tutorial because I didn’t “install” the shelves, per say. I simply built them, according to the directions Ikea provided, and then put them in my closet. Nothing too fancy! 🙂
Great job! Did I miss the link with instructions sharing how others can do it too? Materials list? That would be super helpful!
Thanks
Ah, I see the comment above. Nevermind I guess.
