LIGHTING
Today we are talking the different layers of interior lighting. There are three different types of lighting – Ambient, Task, and Accent. You may have heard of them before, but are not sure what they mean or how to use them.
First, let’s take some time to learn about each lighting style….
AMBIENT
Ambient lighting is your general lighting. When you walk in a room and flip on the switch you are most likely using ambient lighting. Ambient light is design to illuminate the entire room with an even light. This is typically accomplished with Chandeliers, flush mount ceiling fixtures, or recessed lights. Make sure this lighting is a comfortable brightness without a glare. Using too bright of bulbs will create an undesirable effect.
TASK
Task lighting is used exactly as it sounds. It is used to help perform specific tasks. Desk lamps, under cabinet, and pendents are a few examples. Task lighting is designed to illuminate a specific function. Task lighting should be placed anywhere there is a need for more light. It is often unused in a sitting area for more light to read. In the kitchen where food is prepared, or at a desk. Recessed and track lighting may also be used as task lighting.
ACCENT
Accent lighting adds the drama. It draws attention to a particular object. This light is best used to showcase your favorite elements in a room. Maybe you have a beautiful painting or a fine piece of art, a fireplace or a bookshelf that you want to be noticed. Adding a touch of direct light will surely get it noticed.
We believe that lighting design should be beautiful + functional. Our best advice is to layer the three types of lighting to create a dramatic + welcome feel in your home. By adding the right lighting elements in the right way, you will create a room that is unique and interesting. Be brave. Be creative.
