Looking for master bedroom ideas? I recently did a complete master bedroom makeover and love how it all turned out!
I have done projects here and there where after I thought “Hmmm, I wish I would have done that sooner.” My recent makeover of my master bedroom, however, has me teetering on RAGE at myself that I didn’t do this YEARS before! I cannot believe the difference it has made!
The master bedroom is often the last thing to be intentionally decorated. People (read: ME) often feel like no one else really sees this space except for close family members so why bother? Why put time, effort and money into a space that will basically only be enjoyed by you and your spouse? Who cares? Well, I’m here to tell you that that is the VERY REASON why you should make that space exactly how you want it. It is for YOU. It is your sanctuary and it should be treated as such.
- a place of refuge or safety.
Nowhere in that definition of sanctuary does it say “a place for forgotten piles of laundry, things you quickly cleaned up and stashed before you had company and/or stacks of stuff for the donation center.” Now that I have “put my stamp” on our master bedroom it has changed the entire feeling of the house for me! I love going in there. I love going to bed at night. I LOVE waking up in the morning! That is life-changing, you guys. And I’m barely even being dramatic here.
Ok, enough rambling. Here is a little look at what our room looked like before (and has looked for about 10 years prior to this ::picture the monkey covering eyes emoji::).
I mean, to be fair, that was very on point bedding when I got it from Pottery Barn in 2001. 🙂
Does that mean we need to keep it and use it until 2017? No. No it does not.
Master Bedroom Ideas You Can Use Too!
There is “shop this room” information at the end of this post if you’re interested in the products I bought, but there were FOUR main DIY projects that happened in here. 1) Painted the entire room Simply White by Benjamin Moore (nice clean slate to work with) 2) DIY Gold Sharpie Accent Wall for the wall behind our bed 3) I had to recover the benches I ordered (the faux fur that came with them was just a tad too yellow for the space so I recovered them in this faux fur instead) and 4) I transformed inexpensive desks into the perfect nightstands!
I looked high and low for nightstands that were the right height (my bed is tall!), the right width (I had limited space there) and the perfect style. I finally found these desks from Target (affiliate) and fell in love with their lines in addition to them being the perfect height and width. I knew that with a little elbow grease they would be PERFECT.
They came unassembled in the box so I painted the pieces with a tinted primer first and then satin finish in Simply White by Benjamin Moore. I literally just rolled it on with a little sponge roller and it was great! I puttied the hole that was there for the one pull that came with it and sanded it a little before painting.
After allowing them to dry and cure for a couple of days, I put them together. Then I drilled new holes for these gold pulls and it completely updated the whole look! NOW it was exactly what I had pictured in my mind. A couple of round mirrors and lamps (also from Target) and I knew I was headed in the perfect direction for my master bedroom.
The rest was just playing around with accessories, new curtains and curtain rod and a beautiful faux fiddle leaf tree for the corner (see the Shop This Post info at the end!).
I hope there were some master bedroom ideas that you can use as well! To see a full tutorial (plus a video!) on the DIY Gold Sharpie Accent Wall click here!
It was so much fun tweaking certain things to work perfectly as well as doing some larger projects to finish off the space! I love my new master bedroom!
