I’ve heard it said that “necessity is the mother of invention” and my project today will certainly attest to that. The beauty of DIYing things is that you get exactly what you want. I searched high and low and I couldn’t find the bench that I wanted for my living room so I created my own DIY bench (of sorts) by altering a premade one. This is my new favorite way to DIY stuff, you guys!
I ordered this Sabrina Upholstered Bench from Wayfair (affiliate link) because it was fairly inexpensive (for an upholstered bench) and it was the exact length and width I was looking for. But the style? Not so much. I wanted faux fur, dangit, and I was going to get it. So I also ordered a yard of white faux fur and hoped for the best!
I painted the legs with some navy acrylic paint. I’m not sure how well it will hold up, however, so I may seal the legs somehow as well if I notice it chipping off. The warm wood was nice but it wasn’t really jiving with the rest of the decor in there. Other colors I considered were gold, pink and light aqua. I do like the navy because of my navy couch but the beauty is, if I want to change it later, it’s super easy to paint the four legs. Boom!
Anyway, after painting the legs I laid the bench upside down on top of the faux fur (fur side down) and cut the fur to size leaving enough to wrap around the bottom edge. I then used my staple gun to attach the faux fur to the underside. The beauty of this kind of fabric is that you don’t have to be careful with it at all! No fancy corners or needing to make sure the fabric is pulled just right or anything like that! Nothing. Shows. It’s delightful!
Oh, and also, you’re done!
DIY Bench Makeover: Faux Fur
This is the exact look I wanted and I got it for just about $50. If the fabric is on sale you could do it for even less!
Have you ever altered an existing piece of furniture before? I’d love to hear about it! It’s a great way to get exactly what you want without having to build anything from scratch!
