I have always loved the look of shaker style siding on homes. So beachy and natural. I was recently helping my son with an art project where he was to decorate a birdhouse according to a theme of his choosing (I help with art projects, my husband helps with math… it’s a good system). Well, he chose to make one that was half beach house and half wintery cabin. Mmmmm…k? So we have been scouring the local craft stores for things to use on his split personality birdhouse and we came across miniature shingles that people use to build/restore doll houses. We used them on the birdhouse and then I could see a christmas tree project in my future when I realized we had a ton leftover…. Christmas Shaker Style Trees!
So here we go.
- dollhouse shingles (we found ours at Hobby Lobby, pictured below)
- wooden finials (also pictured below)
- paper mache cones, various sizes
- hot glue gun & LOTS of glue sticks
- metallic spray paint (I used silver)
- decorative brads
Here is what the shingles and finials look like…
I made all three trees with that one bag and even had some left over, just FYI.
STEP ONE: Starting at the bottom of paper mache cone, begin hot gluing shingles. When one row is completely filled in, begin the next row by overlapping the first. TIP: The singles are very easy to snap in half to fill in where full shingles might not fit.
STEP TWO: Work your way, row by row, up to the top and then hot glue a finial to the tip.
STEP THREE: Spray paint as desired.
These were definitely cute as is, but the unavoidable gaps left between some of the shingles were bugging me a bit.
STEP FOUR: Hot glue decorative brads, gem stones or anything else you would like to fill in gaps/add interest. And you’re done!
I chose to make these a little more glitzy but I think they would also be awesome if you stained the wood shingles grey or something for a truer “shaker style” look that is a bit more natural.
Either way, this was such a fun project! Spending an afternoon with your glue gun & Netflix is never a bad thing!
