If you’ve been following along with me for very long (especially on Instagram @landeelu) then you know that we have recently finished our basement. This has been a very fun project and now it has given me another mantel to decorate! Two mantels, actually… one in the family room and one in the guest bedroom down there. But I’m only one person and three mantels is fun but also quite a task to decorate! So this year I have focused my attention on only decorating the family room mantel in the basement (and my upstairs mantel, of course, which you can see HERE) and I’m excited to share it with you today!
One of the main projects for my basement mantel is this fun DIY Mirror Art!
I thought it was super cute but then I looked at the price… $149. Wha?? I don’t think so. I knew I could DIY it for a fraction of that price and I didn’t think it would be very hard either. And I was right! Super easy and I did mine for about $12. Crazy, right? Plus I could customize it for the exact size I wanted to fit on my mantel. Perfect! If you have an old mirror laying around then it would be even cheaper for you!
If you want to make your own, here is what you’ll need:
- Mirror (I found mine at Target for only $5! It’s a 13×13 inch mirror)
- vinyl lettering (if you don’t have a vinyl cutting machine and want to purchase this exact design you can in my Etsy shop HERE)
- Flat white paint/primer spray paint
- painter’s tape for masking
STEP ONE: Apply vinyl lettering to mirror (this was super cute even just at this point, by the way, but I continued on with my plan! Ha!)
STEP TWO: If desired, mask mirror frame with painter’s tape to avoid spray painting it.
STEP THREE: Spray paint over vinyl lettering and mirror. I found a few light coats was best, allowing them to dry in between.STEP FOUR: Carefully remove vinyl lettering (I use tweezers) and tape from frame. And you’re done! So easy don’t you think?
Then I added some other wintery stuff to the mantel and I was all set!
I saw those wood trees over on Michael’s site, Inspired By Charm, and knew they’d be perfect! His are the most adorable colors but I kept mine silvery and white. I also just cut mine from a 1″ pine board and he did 2″. I found the garland and star at Michaels.
Maybe next year I’ll get to the guest bedroom mantel too!
