Landee On Etsy

Quite often I get emails from you lovely readers wondering where/if you can purchase something I've made here on the ole blog.  Or where to get the supplies to do so.  Usually the answer is Hobby Lobby or Michael's.  But sometimes it's something I've designed using my Silhouette or with the help of my SIL, Shelly,  at www.sayanythingexpressions.com.

Most common requests are:

Canister Labels:

Vinyl quatrefoil backsplash:

Dream Big subway art (and others we made at Craft Night):

And, most recently, my Valentine's Day board:

So, to make it easier for those who would like to purchase some of these items, we have decided to open a cute little Etsy shop!

I've added a button up there in the top right-hand corner so you can find us easily.

Obviously, not everything I do on here can be replicated/mass produced/shipped easily but if it can I will most likely put it up in the shop in case any of you are interested!  It has already proven to be so much easier than all the emailing back and forth that I can't believe we didn't do it sooner!

Stop by and take a look around.  We don't have a TON of things up yet but we will definitely be adding more as we go along.

We have some cute things up that would be fun for a Valentine's Day gift too.   The Valentine's board pictured above as well as this "Established board" to commemorate when you and your Valentine made it official.  ::audible sigh::

Look for our giveaway going up on eighteen25 in the next couple of days too!

Valentine Photo Card Ideas

Is there anything worse than sitting down with your child and trying to get them to write their name on 20+ Valentines to hand out to the class?  Ugh.   I mean, there are WORSE things but that ranks right up there.

So, way back in 2009 when I first saw the idea (even before Pinterest!) to have your child hold their fist out to the camera, take a picture, add some text and then put a sucker through the photo as if the kid was holding it.... it was like an answer to a never uttered prayer.  See that amazing post HERE!  In 2010, I made and sent those out.  And LOVED them!  Teachers raved about them.  My kids didn't have to write them.  I was so happy.  Plus no lame Spongebob or Dora Valentines needed to be purchased.  Triple bonus.  (I can't find the photos of those finished products, but believe me, they were cute).

2011 came along.  I now know how to do this.  My little girl wanted the same thing.  I obliged.

My boys, however, were a little "over that."  It is a little cheesy for a couple of big and tough 3rd and 5th grade boys, I guess.  So we came up with this.  Same concept, just a little more gruesome.  :)

And now, here in 2012, Valentine's Day is quickly approaching.  We decided to go silly again.

Tanner wanted "Happy Valentine's Day, suckah!!" but I was thinking name-calling didn't mesh with the holiday of love very well.  So we compromised.

Brynn wasn't a fan of how the sucker looked going through her mouth so we settled on this.

Still cute.  Still easy.  And we're done.

Have you done photo Valentine's before?  I'm always looking for new ideas!

Valentine's Day Mantel

Valentine's Day mantel complete!  And I'm thinking it's pretty dang cute and festive.  I decided to go reds and browns this year.  Pink home decor isn't really sitting well with me right now.

So I made the burlap bunting a little while ago.  You can see the tutorial for that HERE.

And I'm not really one to have gigantic wedding photos around but I got one out and dusted it off for the holiday of love.  I think I just heard a collective sigh from all of you.  I know. I know.  We were adorable.  We will have been married 16 years in April!   April 26th actually, if you want to send an e-card or something.    That was way back when I hadn't realized my forehead was actually a fivehead (and in need of some bangs) and the eyebrow tweezers and I hadn't gotten acquainted.  Thank goodness he married me anyway!

I had pinned that gushy/cheesy/I-love-it-so-much-it-hurts saying a while ago and knew I wanted to make a board with it on it for the mantel.  ::single tear::  Who knew I could be so tender? Our love story really is my favorite.  :)

(PS that sign is now available for purchase in my brand spankin' new Etsy shop!  You can find it HERE. We will be adding new items all this week and next so check back!)

Lastly, did you notice anything different about the ol' mantel besides its being bedecked in hearts and gushy sayings?

Well, as a reminder, here is what it looked like before.

And here it is now!

That's right.  I had a mantel built over that lame drywall box shelf! I am so excited about my new mantel.  Isn't it lovely?  Dreams really do come true, you guys.

I thought I'd pass along the information of the amazing craftsman who made it for me.  No, I'm not being compensated in anyway.  I paid for my mantel.   I just like to share when I find something awesome and Steve of Parker Custom Woodworks is just that... awesome!  If you live in the Denver area and are in need of some woodworking, Steve is your guy.  He is meticulous and was waaaaay pickier than I was about everything!  The exact quality you want in a woodworker if you ask me.  And very affordable... another great quality.  :)

I had him send me some photos of some other jobs he has done and put together this jpg below that you can right click, save and/or print for your next project you need Steve's help with.  He really can do it all.

No Sew Valentine Burlap Banner

It's not that I WANT to be decorating for Valentine's Day already.  It's just that after Christmas, my normal decor just isn't cutting it.  I need to ease myself slowly back into my day-to-day decor.  Valentine's Day is a nice bridge back to normalcy.

So, I'm working on my Valentine's Day mantel.  And I started with a cute burlap bunting.  I had pinned this on Pinterest and decided to try and figure out how to make one myself.  But the easy way with no sewing!  Not that it would have been hard to sew a few lines here but still... I didn't wanna.

Source: etsy.com via Landeelu on Pinterest

Here is what I came up with.

Not exactly the same, now that I have them side-by-side but they were sure close in my head! :)

Here's how I made mine:

1) Cut burlap into seven 5x7 inch pieces.

By the way, a little tip to cutting burlap that I learned from the nice lady at the cutting counter at Joann's.  In order to cut a straight line on the burlap, measure to where you want to cut, then pull out one of the burlap fibers at that spot.

You're then left with a nice line to follow!  So much easier than trying to keep that crazy stuff straight yourself.

2) I made a template out of some copy paper I had near by and used it to cut the shape of each pennant.

3)  I then folded down about an inch at the top of each pennant and hot glued it around some baker's twine.

4) Finally, I cut some hearts out of patterned paper and hot glued them on as well.  Done!

Very inexpensive (maybe $5? depending on what supplies you already have) and easy!

I'll show you my complete mantel next week as I finish up a couple more projects.  Also, I'm having a new mantel built this week!  I have had enough of that drywall box that has been passing itself off as a mantel for these past six years.  Enough is enough already.  I can't wait until it's done!

Have you started any Valentine's Day crafting yet?  Am I whacko for starting this early?  You can be honest here.

Decorating With Photos

Recent History: If you remember, I have these HUGE Ikea frames above my couch.  I didn't have anything in them, but hung them up anyway... for, like, a few months.  ::ahem::  Then Christmas came along and the empty frames just wouldn't do!  So I made these posters in Photoshop and got them printed 20x30 size at Costco.  (See full post & downloads HERE)

I LOVED them!  Such a fun way to spruce up the wall for the holidays.

But then, down came the Christmas decor and once again I found myself in a pickle.  What do I put in them NOW???   I had been thinking about doing some photos of my kids but I don't know.... 20x30s of their giant faces?  That might be a bit much.  So I was thinking out loud to some friends about how I wanted to do something where the focus was on a flower (or something) and my kids would be out of focus in the background (or something).   Or... something. I didn't really know what I wanted, to be honest with you.

Then, one of my brilliant friends said "Why not do it where they are signing I Love You with their hands ...each doing a different word?"

Wha????  I couldn't wait to try.

Here, my friends, is the end result:

(Sorry about the glare/reflections!  No matter what time of day I took these photos the result was the same.  I mean, I love the light in there but c'mon!)

To say that I am in love with these would be an understatement.  I may have shed a single tear as I stepped back to look at them for the first time.

And yes, there are subtle Valentine's Day undertones here, but really, couldn't I have these up all the time?  Please say yes.

I love the huge impact these have on the room.  I love that the focus is on their hands so it's not just their huge faces looming over the person laying on the couch (although don't put it past me to take photos of just their eyes or something and put them up there in the future).  I love that my kids are now works of art!  I love that it's a sweet message.  I love that Brynn could not make the Justin Beiber heart with her hands to save her life so we had to go to Plan B (which I think turned out better anyway!).   I love that it took about 10 minutes after church on Sunday to take these photos.  I love when I find a reason to love that I only have three kids (curse you infertility issues!!).  I love the "Colorized" Photoshop action I got from Pioneer Woman (get the PSE versions HERE) which resulted in the perfect muted colors I was looking for.  I love the $8.99 price for 20x30 enlargements at Costco.  I love digital photography.

Most of all, I loved the looks on their faces when they walked in from school on Monday and saw themselves larger than life on the family room wall.  Can't beat that.

Now that I'm in a lovey mood I can't wait to get cracking on some Valentine's crafts! In the mean time, I hope this inspires you to think about using photos for even seasonal decor and holidays.  Why not, right?

Hambone Soup Recipe

I hope you all had a wonderful new year celebration this past weekend!  We went to a friend's party but left at about 11pm, came home, watched the ball drop and then hit the sack.  I know we are totally lame.

I thought I'd start off the new year with a special recipe from a friend.   That friend is Calvin.  He's the one in the green shirt, obvs, and he's there with his lovely wife, Kim.  This photo was taken when we went on a fun couples trip with them to Maui last fall (Kim is also the one who showed me how to make the fabric decor balls!).

Anyway, we went over to Kim & Cal's house last year on New Year's day and he fed us the most delectable soup we had ever tasted.  DELECTABLE I say!

Ever since then, my husband has been begging me to get the recipe from Cal so we could have it at home.  But here was the "recipe" when I asked him... "so, yeah, it's super easy... you just put your leftover ham in a couple of inches of water, add whatever you've got in your fridge, put in whatever spices you like and boil it for a few hours.  Then put it in your fridge overnight, take it out the next day, add some potatoes and that's it!"

Um, wha?

I don't know about you but I need an ACTUAL RECIPE to make things.  So, this year, after more begging, I convinced Cal to TRY and write up an actual recipe that I (and you) could follow.  It did NOT disappoint!  It does take 2 days (not straight, mind you) but it's super easy.

It's the perfect thing to get rid of that leftover ham you had at Christmas but can't stand to eat plain one more time.

Here is the recipe, as written by Cal.... enjoy!

Cal’s World-Famous Hambone Soup

Ingredients:
  • Leftover (usually from Easter or Christmas) “honey-glazed” smoked, spiral-cut style hambone with generous amount of ham remaining including (and very importantly) the sugary juice and any bits of honey glaze. I have always used HoneyBaked or Costco. The “honey-glazed” style is crucial. If you don’t have that style, add sugar to a regular ham (about 2/3 C. brown sugar).
  • Canned corn to taste (usually one can)
  • Canned green beans to taste (usually one can)
  • Canned peas to taste (usually one can)
  • Canned diced tomatoes to taste (usually two large or three regular-sized cans)
  • Canned diced green chilies to taste (usually two small cans)
  • Fresh petit or regular carrots to taste (usually 15-20 or so medium sized petit carrots or 2-3 medium sized regular carrots chopped up)
  • Fresh diced potatoes to taste (usually 2-3 large)
  • One bag of cut frozen okra (not breaded)
  • Spices
    • Oregano to taste (I like a lot)
    • Seasoned Salt and pepper to taste
    • Sage to taste
Directions:

1)    In an 8-12 quart stockpot (you will need the lid as well) put the hambone and all the juice and glazed bits and add about two inches of water to the pot.
2)    Add the diced tomatoes with juice, drained corn, green chilies with juice, drained green beans, drained peas, carrots and spices.
3)    Heat on low until the above is boiling. Add water as necessary to make sure it is not too dry. Cut up the ham into bite-sized pieces.
4)    After a few hours of boiling, add the cut frozen okra.
5)    Allow the above to cook for a few hours.
6)    Cool and allow to sit in a refrigerator over night (this is a very important step).
7)    The next day, remove from refrigerator and sit on stovetop for an hour or so to warm up.
8)    Turn on low heat and allow to come to a rolling boil, making sure there is enough liquid so that the soup can come to a rolling boil. If you turn the heat too high, it will scorch the soup on the bottom and ruin the whole pot.
9)    Add the diced potatoes to the boiling soup about two hours before serving.
10) Remove hambone (all the meat should have fallen off the bone) so you don’t freak people out and serve.

Some people like to spice the soup up with Cholula or Tabasco sauce. Enjoy with homemade rolls or fresh French bread. If you like the soup, tell me at birddogcal@hotmail.com. If you don’t, sorry.

That last line kills me.  And he really does want emails, by the way.  :)
