Hunger Games Cake

Tomorrow is an exciting day, my friends.
It is the day my favorite book of all time comes to life on the big screen!
I will be attending the midnight showing of The Hunger Games tonight with my 12 year old son and I am going to try not to bawl my head off even though I have yet to see the previews without getting a little misty eyed.
Anyway, I thought it would be fun to share with you something some friends of mine and I did way back in 2009.  We were lucky enough to catch wind of this amazing book early on, read it for our online book club, and have been devoted to it ever since.
To celebrate the release of Catching Fire, my friend decided to do a Hunger Games cake contest on her blog.  What does cake have to do with The Hunger Games?  I don’t know.  And really, does it matter?  It was awesome, that’s all I know.  We were to create a scene or idea from the first book out of cake, take pictures and send them to her.  She then compiled them all HERE and people voted.  If you go there and look you should know it was completely rigged, people cheated and so on and so forth.  But that’s another story.  My friend is hilarious, by the way.  You should go look just to see her intro paragraph to the contest.
Hopefully you have read the books and will get the cakes.  If not, you need to go read them and then come back.
Here is my cake I created…. it was called “Yes Frosting, the Final Defense of the Dying.”
I mean, right?
You should have heard my squeals as I pressed those goldfish into that frosting.  I had never decorated a cake before so I just made it up as I went along.  The leaves are made out of melting chocolate I drew onto wax paper and the sticks are chocolate dipped pretzels.
What you can’t see is that 30 seconds after taking these photos, the entire top part of the cake slid off onto the table.  ::sigh::  I guess I’ll never be a professional cake decorator.
Go HERE to see the rest of the entries.  Hilarious.
Then, in 2010, when Mockingjay was being released, we decided to do it all over again.  This time your cake could be from either The Hunger Games or Catching Fire.
Ready for my submission?
It’s called “The Catalyst.”
::said in a whispered tone::
(super deep, right?)
Those are nightlock berries, in case you were confused. And my subtitle was “It must be very fragile, if a handful of berries can bring it down.”
Since this was a cake contest via photos I knew taste did not matter.  So, I went and bought an angel food cake, stuffed Twinkies in the center and frosted over the whole thing.  I thought I was quite brilliant.
You can see the rest of the entries for our Second Annual Hunger Games Cake Contest HERE.
So tell me, have you read these amazing books?  Are you going to the midnight release tonight?  I should have won both of these contests, right? :)  What scene would you have tried to recreate?
I’m giddy, can you tell?

p.s. I’m the Abby you’ve sent vinyl samples to through your Etsy shop–we haven’t forgotten or changed our mind about ordering, just life getting in the way. I’ll be in touch about that soon!

Those cakes are awesome – I love them! I actually live in Germany and the movie came out today (for some reason they’re weird and do their releases on thursdays here), and it was amazing. They did such a good job with it, and yes – I cried like a fool a few times! :)

Memories, like the corners of my mind, misty water colored memories of the way we were. Sigh. Good times. I think the best days of my life are over.

I hope someday you link to that book you half wrote with that one girl who used to be hilarious. With my looks and your brains… we could have had the next Twilight on our hands.

    Missing you.
