96 Pumpkins

Have I told you that I am the "hospitality" person for my kids' school's PTO?  This basically means that I am here to give the teachers a warm fuzzy feeling from all the parents on all the major holidays (plus something daily during Teacher Appreciation week ::sigh::).  There are 96 people (teachers plus staff) that  I need to give something to during these times.  Ninety. Six.

Here is what I came up with for Halloween this year.....

I got a hold of Martha Stewart's new Handmade Holiday Crafts book and these were in there... so cute!!   I asked a couple of friends to come over (I call them my "committee" but they don't really know that I consider them my permanent helpers.  Don't tell them or they will stop taking my calls) and we hammered these out in a couple of hours.   They are just a double layer of 10 inch circles cut from tissue paper (Martha uses crepe paper but that's not readily available in big sheets and I didn't want to have to order anything.  Tissue paper worked great).  Fill the circle with goodies, wrap up and secure the top with tape.  We used masking tape and then went over it with floral tape for the stem since floral tape is my new nemesis and doesn't stick very well.  I then created some little 2" tags in Photoshop, printed and tied them on.    I can't wait to see these all lined up in the teachers' boxes!

We also made our Mummy Juicebox Army I talked about for the upcoming class party.  Instructions can be found HERE.  We used white duct tape that we ripped in half lengthwise instead of white electrical tape.  I LOVED making these, by the way.  So easy and you can't mess them up.  I squealed at each one's cuteness upon completion.

I also finished making these Rice Krispie Ghost Pops for the party as well...

Super easy using the pre-made Rice Krispie treats.  I just squished the tops of them a little to round them out.   Instructions found HERE.

I adore checking things off my to-do list.

PS If I ever come to you and ask "Why is my son so screwed up?  Why does he hate me?  Why is "mom's blog" a dirty word to him?"   Please point me back to this.....

... poor thing.

In my defense, I wasn't "feelin'" the green shirt for my Halloween treats... I have no explanation on the face thing though.

Class Halloween Party Plan

Did you, like me, find yourself volunteering to run your child's Halloween Party only to realize suddenly that it's THIS FRIDAY????   I know,  I have no idea why they are doing it Friday instead of Monday (I could reeeeally use that weekend to make some cute things happen) but Friday it is.

Thankfully Pinterest has come to the rescue for the gajillionth time.   I have the party all planned and it will be epic.  Well, epic for these Kindergarteners who have never had a Halloween party before anyway.  :)  I thought I'd share my plan in case you are panicking and don't know what to do for your grade schooler's Halloween celebration.

We will have four stations, each lasting about 10 minutes (the party is one hour).  Two crafts, a game and a snack.  Then at the end, if we have time, the kids will do a little parade around the room to show off their costumes.  Done and done.

CRAFT #1:
Paper Plate Ghosts from A Little Space Like Home.  Cute, inexpensive, easy and will take 10 minutes to complete.  That hit all my requirements!

CRAFT #2:
Popcorn Witch Hands (I googled it and saw it here).  I know that photo is HORRIFIC but I know the kids will love making them and it will take them at least 10 minutes, which is the ultimate goal, right??  Plus I already have a ton of those gloves.  Bonus!

GAME:
Don't Eat Jack! from Pink Polka Dot Creations.  My kids LOVE playing the original "Don't Eat Pete!" so this is a no brainer.  Plus the game can last as long as you need it to and is easy to explain.  Super cute and a free printable... check!

SNACKS:
Donut Tree from One Charming Party.  This is if I'm feeling ambitious but how adorable is that donut tree???  No five year old will appreciate it but I will.  If I'm NOT feeling ambitious it will just be a paper plate stacked with donuts.  As long as they are edible, no kid will complain.

Mummified Juice Boxes from Blue Cricket Design.  Love that these can just be done ahead and brought but will add such a fun detail to the par-tay.

And as a little take home treat, I want to make these super cute Ghost Rice Krispie Treats from The Idea Room.  To make it even easier I think I'll just use the pre-made Rice Krispie treats and trim the corners a bit to make the ghost shape.

So there it is, the Afternoon Kindergarten Halloween Class Party 2011!  Totally doable, right?  What about you.... are you in charge of your child's class party?  What kinds of things are you planning?

By the way, I've officially felt the marked beginning of the "busy holiday season."  I have a love/hate relationship with it.   I envy those who love every.single.second of it.

Final Halloween Details

I've been in Utah this past week having so much fun with the craft nights and boutique! Yes, I'm exhausted, thanks for asking.  But that has more to do with staying up until 4am with my SIL and then waking up at 7am on the regular.  Why do we do this to ourselves?  We have never been able to answer that question.

Anyway, I realized I never posted my last final Halloween touches I put up right before we left. If you're totally OVER Halloween decor at this point, try to not be too annoyed.

I prettied up my plain light fixture in the kitchen by scotch taping up some black & white ribbon and wrapping a $10 Target "fall berry garland" around its innards.  Nothing ground breaking here but I love it.

Then, in the entry, I put this adorable vinyl "crow cage" up that I ordered from here.

It would be so cute in white or cream but I needed it to be spooky so I went black and had her give me a crow for a pet rather than a nice dove or something.  I like him.  I think I'll name him Edgar Allen Poe Nevermore.  Mr. Crow for short.

I added some self-adhesive rhinestones for a bit of dimension and Halloween glitz.

I have been at a loss on how to decorate my blue entry for All Hallow's Eve but I think this should suffice for this year.

Now to get some costumes and we will be all set!  Actually I need to ASK my kids what they want to be first and THEN get some costumes.  I know, I'm a little behind.  It's like this every year, trust me.  Please tell me you're the same way.

Pumpkin Crunch

My friend (Ann of Cupcake Tasting Party fame) casually mentioned this recipe she had seen on her SIL's Facebook as we sat at our daughters' dance class.

Pumpkin Crunch, you say?

My ears perked up and my back straightened slightly.  There may have even been a raising of the eyebrow, not sure.  Sounded delicious.  Just from the title.  So I quickly copied it down in my handy-dandy Family Organizer and went about my business.  "My business" being heading straight to the grocery store to get the ingredients for this and then going home and making it.

It's a fancy (and EASY) twist on the ole fall favorite, pumpkin pie.  I'm not a huge fan of pumpkin pie myself.  I'd much rather have some banana cream pie.  But this, THIS, my friends, will be added to the Thanksgiving feast.  And will probably be made weekly from about mid-September to the end of November.  It's my new "Fall Is Officially Here" treat.

PUMPKIN CRUNCH

1 15oz. can pumpkin
1 12oz. can evaporated milk
1 1/2 C. sugar
3 eggs
1 1/2 t. cinnamon

Combine above ingredients and pour into greased 9x13 pan.

1 Yellow Cake Mix
1 C. melted butter

Sprinkle cake mix on top of pumpkin mixture and pour melted butter over top.

Bake at 350 for 1 hour and 10 minutes.

This is what it will look like fresh out of the oven.

Your house will smell amazing and the second you taste it you will realize, fall is officially here.

Halloween Printable

It's time to ditch the summer printable in favor of a more seasonably appropriate one.  I think this one has the right amount of "spook" and fun combined.  I did, however,  have to explain to my kids what an ultimatum is and why this is funny.  By way of example I used the commonly used BYU phrase "Either marry me or we are breaking up!"  That led to other discussions though so you may want to come up with your own examples.  :)

Available in 5x7 and 8x10!

For my hurricane jar there I just painted some mini-pumpkins the same way I did HERE and made a few more fabric balls.  I also painted another bigger pumpkin and added the ribbon.  That glitter paint is addictive!

Also, if you live in UT come to a craft night my SIL & I are hosting in Bountiful on October 14th or in Logan on October 15th!  Click HERE for the details.  Hope to see you there!
