Summer Mantel, inspired

Remember when I featured this mantel last week?  Oh, what, you think that was just for show? No no!  I put my feature where my hands were and set to work!  The above is my version using what I had around.  And, as you can see, it matches my blog perfectly (I think I have a color obsession going on around here)!

I grabbed my family rules subway art I made with Shelly from Say Anything Expressions a while ago (more on that at the end of this post!) as my basis.  I have been looking for a spot for it for months and finally figured out where I wanted it.

As for the garland, I think Alicia actually used fabric and sewed her garland I was trying to recreate.   Um, yeah,  Landee no can sew.   I mean I can (a little) but if I can get close using paper then all the better!

I just took my 3"scalloped circle punch and punched out some circles with paper I liked.

Next, I folded it in half (lining up the scallops) and punched smaller circles in the middle of each scallop.

Then, using a glue stick, I simply glued the two sides together around a piece of string.  Done!

Other details:

  • The letter "A" I had gotten from Hobby Lobby and was gold.  A little spray paint fixed that right up.
  • I stole some of my thumbtack balls from the living room and put them in a glass bowl.  Easy.
  • I also spray painted that 5x5 frame to match the yellow of my thumbtack ball.  You'd think she was my favorite kid, but really it's just that she started Kindergarten last week (yay!) and I liked that photo I took on her big day.
  • For the subway art, I spray painted a 15x30 canvas and applied the vinyl from Say Anything Expressions!  So fun and easy!
If you are wanting the vinyl for this subway art, Shelly is running a "Landee Special" (those really do exist) where you can get it 25% off!  Just put "landee" as the promo code when ordering.   My size (15x30) would normally be $18 but with the code it's only $13.50.  The one she made at the same time was 24x36 and would normally be $25.50 but with the code it's $19.

Below is Shelly's version:

She can do any size and many different colors... just ask her or look around on SayAnythingExpressions.com.  The "Landee Special" ends September 1 so take advantage now!

Thanks for stopping by & I hope your kids are back in school like mine! :)

Okay, I love it all, but WHAT??? Your kids are back in school?? Mine don't go back till Sept. 6th!! I'm actually happy about it, but that's nutso that it's so different!

But, yes, I love, love, LOVE the blue you used! I'm actually blog hopping now so I can procrastinate even more from doing my own Family Rules sign!

Very cute! I don't have a mantle so I'm going to start pretending the top of our upright piano is a mantle :)

Don't you have more than one child? Or is she the only one who goes with Tiffany blue?

LOVE your mantel!!! It's so fresh, and um, summery! :)

And your little banner is right up my alley! I don't sew (notice I didn't say can't....just don't) so this is one even I can do! :)

I really like the way this looks! My mantel changes a lot from fallish-Easter and then stands still the rest of the year. In fact, empty completely until a week or so ago. So depressing. I think I need to make one of those family rules signs.
