The Kitchen Gets Some Love

It's hard to believe that just two weeks ago this was my kitchen.

Absolutely NOTHING was going on in there.  It was the same beige/taupe/boring as the rest of the house.  It's a nice functional kitchen, yes, but what was in there that made me want to hang out in there?  Oh, that's right.  Nothing.    And I also realize that a pristine white kitchen is all the rage right now but I don't have one so I needed to work with what I have.  Truth be told, I love my cabinets.  I don't for see ever switching them out, but don't hold me to that.

And here's what it looks like today!

Here's how it all went down...

So I wanted to add some pizzazz without having to do a ton of work or having to spend a lot of money.  What to do...what to do.....  I then ran across this post at House of Smith's (as I'm sure many of you have).  The quatrefoil caught my eye and got my wheels spinning.  I was thinking about painting the design but knew that it would be tough getting it right.  I thought about stenciling but all the quatrefoil stencils I've seen are HUGE and I wanted them to be quite small.    So I too decided to do it in vinyl.  Then I could do whatever size I wanted and it would be easy to put up.

Having an amazing SIL with a thriving vinyl business helped me decide to go this route as well.  She loves all my ideas even though sometimes she should probably go "Really?  You really want to do that?"  But she doesn't.  She's my biggest and most supportive fan, that one!    I'll tell the costs later but I think you'd be surprised how inexpensive this route can be.   ***EDIT*** It is now available for purchase in our new Etsy shop!  Find it HERE.

First I painted the backsplash a nice gray (Valspar Montpeilier Ashlar Gray).  I thought it would tie in nicely with the gray in my countertops as well the appliances and hardware.

Side note (I'm a fan of side notes, btw): While I was laying on my back on my cooktop to tape off underneath the microwave I noticed this:

Um, what?  Those filters should be cleaned ONCE.  A.  MONTH??  Are you kidding?  I think I'm more on the once-every-five-years-filter-cleaning program so I have until ::checking calendar::  April 10th of this year to get it done!  Do any of you clean your fan/hood filters once a month?  Wait, maybe I don't want to know.

End side note.

After the paint was sufficiently dried & cured I then began applying the vinyl.

I used an exacto knife to cut around outlets and for the small amount of overhang at the bottom.  It cut it like buttah.

The one area I was a little worried about (for the vinyl's sake) was the area by the cooktop.  I've had some minor to extreme cases of tomato sauce splattering and other cooking disasters we won't get into here.  I was also worried about the heat.  My solution?  To hang a picture there.  I figured I could wipe that down fairly easily and it would protect the vinyl there in the hottest area.    I spray painted & glazed the frame to get just the look I wanted.

And I put in a goofy picture of my kids that I absolutely love.  Looking at that picture makes stirring a pot much more enjoyable.

And in the bloggyland way of full disclosure, here is my desk area right now...

Uh...yeah... tools still out, giant Sonic cup screaming that I have a slight addiction to Diet. Dr. Pepper, vinyl unfinished (my math skills once again proved unfavorable so I'm waiting for a bit more to arrive...oops), hair gel, garbage, etc.  It WILL get done but it's not quite yet.  Just thought you should know.

So that's it!  I am so so so pleased with how it turned out.  My kitchen actually has a little bit of a personality now and I have a "direction" to my decorating in there.  I have other projects in mind which will continue to customize the space to my liking.

Costs:  One pint of paint for about $15 (didn't even use half).  And the vinyl, without a family/biggest fan discount, would have been about $75 for all of that.  The frames were from Goodwill, totaling about $8.  $98 total!

I really have a brand new feeling kitchen for under $100.  My husband was excited about that. :)

Here are the side by side before & after:

how does one go about curing paint?

you are awesome. and now your kitchen is, too.

Curing paint is super hard... you have to sit around and watch American Idol for it to completely dry. Patience is not my strong point so I was very proud of myself for waiting. And thanks! You're the best.

I feel like the picture behind the cooktop MAKES the kitchen. It's such an awesome pop of color.

Also, what is WITH you americans and the Diet Dr. Pepper. I'm a fan, but it's SO hard to find in Canada.
I'm a Diet Coke LIFER.

Also, I love House of Smith's pantry, and I love seeing how you used that for inspiration for the backsplash. AWESOME!

You've been hiding this amazingly creative and energetic person somewhere. :) And now, I wish I could stand close to you for a few minutes and pick up some of the creativity and energy. I'm starting to look around my house and it's really...uh...needs something. I still totally love my chocolates and warm colors, but it could really use some fresh-ness. Can you make chocolates and warm fresh? If you run out of projects at your house and need something to do....??? ;-D I Love it, btw. Your kitchen looks awesome and I can't get over that blue you're using. LOVE it.

That looks amazing! I can't believe how beautiful. So, I have had my microwave over the stove for ages and I have never once cleaned the filters...not once. I don't think I've even wiped the bottom of my microwave down. I guess it it breaks I'll be to blame because I never knew I was to clean it once a month. :)

OK. Even though I have my own blog, I don't go around writing on everybody's blog wall. But I just had to write here! First...I needed the picture tip. Big. Time. I have a wall with the same splatter issue. And because my husband cooks often, (and is SUPER messy...think every-pot-and-pan-in-the-kitchen-used-to-heat-up-a-ca- of-soup-kind-of-messy), this may actually work for us! And I am loving the vinyl idea. Had not seen it before! AND DIET DR. PEPPER, TOO? I think I justs found my blog heaven. I swear, it's the only thing I drink other than an occasional glass of orange juice or water. I am a happy new follower! You will definitely be featured on my next Great Blog Finds this week. :)

Hi, can you tell me how to get this pattern onto my Silhouette? I can't find it anywhere and am a new Silhouette owner and LOVE that quatrefoil design. I totally want to do this to my kitchen!!!

Christi @ Love From The Oven said...

LOVE this! Your kitchen is gorgeous and what an awesome breath of fresh air that gave to it. I actually have paint chips all over my kitchen because I want to change the kitchen color, which basically means the backsplash. My two other random thoughts - there is almost always a styrofoam cup hiding somewhere in my photos (a la Where's Waldo) to support my Diet Coke addiction, and great, now I can't plead ignorance on the microwave filter cleaning. Ugh.

ooohhh....yeah...gonna check into that vinyl for sure!! seeing your "backsplash" made me laugh. we just got done refinishing our cabinets and got new countertops. the backsplash behind the stove is gone and all i had to look at was ugly drywall. so i used sticky squares to hold scrapbooking paper up there....thought about getting a piece of clear acrylic to put over it...my hubs thinks i'm crazy. thanks for the confirmation that i'm on the right track!! will link you back if i do it!

RANDOM QUESTION: Where's your oven?

Landeelu said...

Hi Anonymous! Your question made me laugh. I came back here to see if I really didn't have them pictured anywhere and then I spotted them! If you look in the photo up there where I've just started painting the backsplash gray and everything is piled on the island, you can see I have double ovens stacked there along the back wall on the left.

Thanks for stopping by!

I would love to know how I could get some vinyl like that? Soooo interested. Is it for sell?

Shelly @A Creative Space said...

Beautiful -brought a smile to my face immediately!

Holly Baker said...

I LOVE the idea!!! I have been planning my kitchen, but some backsplashes are sooo busy. I love the simplicity of your choice.

Question: Is the vinyl just the stenciling part? I am assuming that is why you painted? Is the vinyl stuck tp that paper and it literally pulls off?

Sorry for my ignorance, it just seems vinyl has changed sooo much in 10 years!

Lexi M. said...

How can I buy that vinyl for my own backsplash!? :)

Missy L said...

Your kitchen looks great!! Is there a way we can order vinyl from your SIL's company? Would love to do my pantry. Thx!!

Susiebelle said...

You could hang some plexiglass over the stove.

Geri Apodaca said...

Very Nice. I was wondering, if your counters were already Gray to start with?

Erica Kohs said...

This is so neat! I am wondering though what to do when you have a wall that connects to another wall (our kitchen/dining room are combined) do you just "stop" the stencil and cut it?
