Entry Way ReMixx

History:  We moved into this house 4 years and 11 months ago.   After moving around the country to various states every two years since we were married, we moved here and instantly declared we were never moving again.  In every other house (knowing we'd only be there a short time), I'd feel a sense of urgency to hurry and decorate/paint every wall/put my stamp on the house.  Knowing we would be here indefinitely lulled me into a sort of decorating funk.  I felt no rush...my whole life was ahead of me to decorate...I think I was waiting for the house to whisper to me what it wanted or something.  I don't know.  The point is I'VE.  DONE.  NOTHING.

Until now.

Here is our entry way as it was a few weeks ago.

Lame.  Boring.  Vanilla.  Blaaaah.

No accessories.  No color.  Nothing.

After perusing many decorating/crafty blogs I was finally inspired by this technique at Jones Design Company.  I knew that if I could figure out how to jimmyrig a ladder to reach up to that right corner, I could do it.   It was high and scary but I trusted the zip ties which were holding my ladder to the railing.  Usually.

After painting the curved section with Valspar's Bird Song Blue paint, I printed off the template here and then cut it out of a thick cardboard.

I traced it on with pencil and then painted over it with a metallic white paint (no fancy paint required, just some metallic white craft paint...it took about two bottles).  In retrospect, I probably would have added a little bit of opaque white paint in with the metallic as there are a few places where the pencil line shows through under the translucent metallic paint.

Um, that might be my phone there in my shirt.  Oops.

This took the better part of two days to finish but I was able to listen to Pride & Prejudice while I painted which  made it highly enjoyable work (I had never read it before...I know, what is wrong with me??).  I then painted the curved area below the stairs the same color but opted to not carry the design down there.... the jury is still out on that, by the way.  What do you think?  Should I add a two foot band of the design below?  Do the whole thing?  Leave it plain?  I'm open to suggestions.

Finishing touches included painting the existing frame there with the same metallic paint, switching out the table that was there for one from the living room, pulling a chair from our guest room, getting a pillow off the couch in the neighboring living room....

...and spray painting this Goodwill $4 frame.  It was a nasty gold before.  I'm so bugged I did not take a before pic.  Seriously.

And here is the big "after reveal!"

Side by side comparisons:

I could not be happier with how it turned out.  Especially considering it only cost me about $30 in paint plus $4 for that Goodwill mirror.  That's ::getting out calculator:: a grand total of $34 if you're as bad at math as I am!

Oh, and I'm now in love with Mr. Darcy and have watched almost every movie adaptation of P&P.  Colin Firth will always and forever be my Fitzwilliam Darcy.

I would leave it exactly as it is. If you did it somewhere else I think it would vie for attention and make your eye track back and forth. Love this - colors and all!

I saw you on Tip Junkie.

This is beautiful! I think you should keep it the way it is with the stenciling. Maybe paint the rail black? That would totally make it pop!

Just a heads up, I'll be featuring you and this project on friday on my blog (www.thriftyandchic.com). Come and grab a button :)

Beautiful makeover! I would not bring the stencil down. Right now, the design takes your eye up and I think that's perfect for the foyer. Love the color and the translucent metallic. And congrats on finally hearing/watching "Pride and Prejudice." Colin Firth *is* the best Mr. Darcy, is he not? ~~Rhonda :)

Had to chuckle when I saw you way up there on the ladder--I've similarly risked my life for decorating projects! It was worth it in your case--this looks fabulous. I like the lower wall solid. I would keep it the way you have it. And I LOVE the little seating area. Great job.

I wanted to come over as well to say..wow! wow! wow! So beautiful! I love the stencil just on the top half, I think it makes it really stand out. You are so brave (I am so terrified of heights) and talented. Job well done!

Absolutely GORG! I adore it! I think you were very smart to just do the upper section...I wouldn't change a thing!

And I love to say, "No idea is ever truly original...they are all inspired from another inspired idea!"

Looks so great! I tried using that stencil but I couldn't for the life of me get it to connect with each direction...do you know what I mean? The stencil to the side wouldn't line up with it, and if it did, the stencil to the bottom wouldn't line up. It drove me crazy, so I eventually gave up. Any tips would be appreciated! :)

Landee you are my paint HERO! I want to do a wall like this so bad but I'm so scared of the tedious job that I wont finish it! And your ladder with the zip ties had me ROFL! Your brave to boot! I would love to have you share this at my VIP party today @ http://designergarden.blogspot.com/2011/03/vip-party-7.html

Wow!!! I'm so impressed that you did all that stenciling on a high ladder. I'm afraid of heights so it's extra impressive to me. Did you see Colin Firth accept his Academy Award? It's so funny, as only British people can be. I have to admit that Mr. Darcy, in the version with Kiera Knightly was real good too.

Bekah Saffert said...

I know someone already suggested painting your railing, but if you look in your before picture the light hits the top railing just right so that it looks white. I hope that made sense. It made me think the railing could all go white rather than black. I love your blog btw and the transformation looks awesome!

Like the idea of painting the railing and maybe the stair treads black. Maybe put a couple of big , white matted B& W photos on the wall to keep your eyes interested once drawn to the wall. I made my own Moroccan stencil and painted a copper metallic border on my ceiling.

Lets be Pride and Prejudice friends. I search for new adaptations of P&P. You need to watch Downton Abbey -- it's so addictive.

Your entryway looked great in the first picture, but after seeing your transformation, the first picture looks a little dull. Makes me think about areas in my house that may need a little dazzle. Great job!! It seems that a lot of people are turning to some color in their paint colors and steering away from brown/beige.
